CANTON – The St. Lawrence County Legislature agreed Tuesday to authorize the signing of a Mohawk land claims settlement, despite cautious approval. Only one legislator voted against the authorization and one abstained. In May, the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe signed a Memorandum of Understanding with officials from New York State and St. Lawrence County to bring a decades‑long land settlement closer to resolution. The final settlement would permit the Tribe to acquire, only from willing sellers, identified lands in St. Lawrence County and return th...

To The Editor, She:kon. I have been reading about other casinos that may compete with the Akwesasne Mohawk Casino, including one by the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne. All of a sudden, I am now concerned about the possibility of fewer tribal resources to cover a growing population here. Is there any planning being done to account for this possibility? Once upon a time, our people were told that if a big casino were to be built, that there would be plenty of jobs for Akwesasronon. Some people here do have the promised jobs but most of those jobs...
Niawen Kowa On behalf of myself and my family I would like to say Niawen Kowa to the Snye Recreation Committee and families who put together the fundraiser for me. This is something I am not used to, my family and I are usually helping out with fundraising and funerals, and it was so different and hard not helping out. The response given was overwhelming and I will be forever grateful to the community for the support given. I will continue to help out whenever and however long I can, I know firsthand any help given at any event is helpful. So...

For about two weeks now Bessie Mitchell has been getting nighttime visitors, only they are not invited. Something is trying to get into her garage, and it looks like it is trying to eat it! At first it was thought to be a dog, but the damage sure doesn't look like a dog could cause it. AMPS and MCA Conservation have both visited Bessie's home, and traps were even set, but no animal. If something like this has happened to you, or you think you may know what animal this is, give the Indian Time...

Reynolds Tobacco Co. is taking on tribal cigarette manufacturers, in a fight that’s already included covert investigations, aerial surveillance and confidential informants. With a lawsuit quietly filed Thursday in Washington, the North Carolina-based R.J. Reynolds and another firm challenge the Agriculture Department’s failure to collect Tobacco Trust Fund fees from two tribal cigarette manufacturers in particular. If R.J. Reynolds and the Santa Fe Natural Tobacco Co. win their suit, they’ll get a refun...
The entertainment community as well as most of the world was shocked last week by the death of comedian and Oscar winner Robin Williams. During the countless television interviews that followed a close friend said Williams used to stop by comedy clubs and meet backstage up and coming comedians. One of these entertainers was Akwesasne's Matthew "Aardvark" Herne. The scene was at the Syracuse Hotel in the early 1980's. Herne was on stage with the late Charley Hill, Willie Dunn and Floyd Westerman...
Syracuse, N.Y. -- A horse in southern Oswego County has died of Eastern equine encephalitis virus, the first reported EEE horse death this year in the state. The Oswego County Health Department said the horse had been stabled near an area known to harbor the EEE virus in Oswego and Onondaga counties. The horse was probably exposed to EEE in late July, prior to the aerial spraying, according to the department. Human cases of EEE are rare, but very serious. About one-third of people infected with EEE die. An Onondaga County resident recently...
Whenever people come together, words are said; good words of greetings and acknowledgment are said. First we acknowledge each other. We thank the Creator for allowing us to meet here today safely. Next we thank Mother Earth, we walk upon her, and she has never failed to support us. She is the mother, we are her children. With our kindest words, and our purest thoughts, we thank you mother earth. Now we are of one mind. Next we thank the bodies of water. The ocean, lakes and rivers, which bring energy to mother earth. The waters are always...

Over the weekend there was quite a scene at the community garage sale on Rt. 37. Apparently a swarm of hundreds of bees just suddenly dropped dead. On Monday the parking lot of Rt. 37 Homes was still filled with dead bees. I thought Googling "Why would a swarm of bees drop dead" would yield some answers, but none very definitive. I asked Paul Hetzler, Horticulture and Natural Resources Educator for the Cornell Cooperative Extension of St. Lawrence County, his opinion on the event. He said that...
By: Arisawe August 16, 2014. The day was damp and overcast. It sprinkled a little and at times it rained but it wasn't enough to prevent the food vendors, the craft vendors, the performers, speakers and staff from making those visitors happy that they spent the day at the Native North American Travelling College. The NNATC is celebrating 40 years since they've opened their doors, or hit the road, to share culture, publications, traditional songs and dance and in the end, their main accomplishmen...
