  • To the Editor

    Aug 21, 2008

To the Editor, A few years ago Mohawk entrepreneur Windell King proposed to build a garbage gasifier in close to the Akwesasne region. However, the idea of transporting garbage from larger cities to either Cornwall or on to the reservation was unpopular. Though it may not seem obvious, the Akwesasne region is actually blessed with natural resources that may be converted into renewable energy.  One example is the plan to test a river turbine in the north channel of St. Lawrence River next to Cornwall. Except over 80% of the kinetic energy in t...

Even the porcupine quills and moose hair that decorated their leather garments were dyed beautiful colors. Using plants and animals for dyeing is an  ancient practice. It is believed that in 3000 BC, the juice from the leaf of the indigo plant was used to make  a blue dye. Also, in the ancient city of Ty...

  • Life on the Farm

    Adrian McDonald|Aug 21, 2008

Being in the fire department means you have an additional three homes to go to if the need arrives. To understand this I’ll put in perspectives everyone can understand. No matter where I am, I’m always a couple miles away from a bathroom. I also have to share that bathroom with fifty other firefighters. I eat lunch at the fire station with the theory that one of these days the tones will go off during lunch and I’ll finally be able to drive one of the trucks. It happened a couple of times, enough to keep me going there for lunch. Besides that,...

  • Bring back naptime!

    An Anonymous Mother|Aug 21, 2008

With so much to do and not do in the summer Baby T has been able to not take a nap. In the beginning I tried and tried to get him to take a nap. I would shut everything off and lay with him and make a room completely black and cool. We started a failed routine of going to a park and playing for an hour or more then driving around hoping Baby T would eventually pass out from the combination of hard play and the movement of the car. Of all the usual sure fire ways to induce a nap each failed miserably. All I ended up with was a giggling kid in...
