Twenty teams of twenty-two people competed all day Saturday in the Sun Life 1st Annual Cornwall Waterfest Dragon Boat Race. Dragon boats are 22-person canoes dating centuries back to China. The boats are molded with dragon designs and have become a popular tourist-type event in recent years. On Aug. 18, 2010, a few minutes after midnight, two boats collided in the St. Lawrence River shipping channel just south of Kawehno:ke (Cornwall Island) near Snake Island and Buoy 1. On August 10, 2010, 14-year-old Hunter Francis made a hole-in-one at Cedar View Golf Course in Massena/Helena. The accomplishment took place at Hole 6, a 3-par, 135 yard hole. Francis, the son of Tim and Darlene Francis, used his Cleveland 9 iron to hit his tee shot about three feet past the hole. As of Sept. 1, 2010, New York State will begin enforcing a law to require on-reservation businesses around the state to charge tax on tobacco products sold to non-Native customers. On August 12, 2010 at approximately 1:00 am, the St. Regis Mohawk Tribal Police Department (SRMTPD) responded to a home invasion call located off of State Route 37, Akwesasne, NY. St. Regis Mohawk Tribal Police charged Justin Cooke with several offenses Friday after he allegedly fired a rifle near McDonald Road in Akwesasne. Police said Cooke fired the rifle from a vehicle but did not say what the man’s intentions were.
