The 2013 Louie E. King Softball Tournament was held over the weekend at the Louie E. King Ballfield behind the American Legion Post in Akwesasne. The purpose of the tournament is to raise funds for college bound high school graduates and consists of a $200 award. The tournament is a two day competition and has 8 teams who pay a $250 entry fee, which goes towards the scholarships. Being a coed tournament, there is a 4 girl on the field rule at all times. On Tuesday August 6, Island Recreation Programs got together and held a Jr. Olympics for the kids at the Anowara’ko:wa Arena. The event was put together by summer students Kananakehneh Green, Maegan Thomas, Tommi Lee Thomas, and Kuylin Chaussi, all working for the Anowara’ko:wa Sport & Fitness Program. A sunny sky along with a cool breeze makes a perfect day for a kickball tournament. Four teams competed last Saturday for bragging rights and to raise money in a kickball tournament sponsored by the Akwesasne Area Management Board Career and Development Program. The four teams that participated were the Bone Crushers, Turtle Island Promotions, the Lazy Boys and Saggy Bottom Kickers. The Bone Crushers came away with the victory title for 2013.
