After an extensive investigation, St. Regis Mohawk Tribal Police have concluded their investigation into the recent and tragic death of Hattie Bero. Medical reports released by Fletcher Allen Hospital in Burlington, VT, confirmed that Bero died from head injuries sustained because of a fall. The Salmon River Board of Education announced the appointment of a new high school principal this week, following the retirement this summer of longtime principal and administrator John Simons. John Fairchild, former principal of Plattsburgh High School, has been selected to fill Mr. Simons’ shoes. The St. Regis Mohawk Tribe has filed a lawsuit against the state of New York and Franklin County for violating the 1796 Treaty of Seven Nations by claiming ownership to the area known as the Hogansburg Triangle. The tract of land is surrounded by federally recognized reservation land and has been inhabited by Mohawks throughout history. The county claims ownership to the parcels of land in the triangle and has legally foreclosed on the properties without proceeding with the next phase of auctioning off the land. Men and women went to work Saturday at the Mohawk Nation Longhouse, replacing the roof. The entire group volunteered their time and while the men were hammering down the new roof, the women cooked lunch for all the volunteers. Money was raised for the new roof by the longhouse faith keepers and some money was also donated from the Akwesasne Women Singers. It took the group just one day to replace the roof. Two weeks ago they invited a representative from the Hospice of the North Country to come and collect all the blankets they’d made. The seniors wanted to give the blankets to those who needed them.
