  • Tips for Drying Flowers

    Aug 12, 2021

By Melinda Myers Enjoy and share the beauty of your flower garden all year long. Pick and dry a few flowers to use in flower arrangements, craft projects or as gifts for friends and family. Pick the flowers when they are at peak bloom and blossoms are dry. Cut flowers for drying mid-day when they contain less moisture to reduce the dry time. Use a bypass pruner or garden scissors to cut the stems above a set of healthy leaves. Remove the foliage and gather them into small bundles. Secure the...

  • Why Wear Orange

    Doug George-Kanentiio|Aug 12, 2021

By Doug George-Kanentiio People ask why the residential school survivors, their respective families and supporters wear orange. Mohawk Nation faith keeper Kevin Deer Kanahsohon told me why. Orange is the color of fire; it is the source of heat during the cold season and light in the dark of night. It is what cooks our food, provides us with comfort and in its ashes and flames are the stories of the trees which are its fuel. In former times, when we lived in longhouses there were communal fires...

  • Letter to the Editor

    Aug 12, 2021

Letter to the Editor About a year ago I helped a fellow native to get a dog like mine. Whenever he would see me at a store he would go to my truck and play with my dog and tell me how much he wanted one like her. Unfortunately, another litter was born and there was a dog almost like mine. I took this guy and his 2 kids to see this puppy. His kids fell in love with it. I made him promise me this dog would be trained and live inside. He promised and I talked the owner of the litter into letting him buy a puppy. I was so happy the puppy would be...

  • A routine trip to Syracuse turns out to be potentially dangerous

    Aug 12, 2021

by Kanietonkie An Akwesasronon traveled to Syracuse with her daughter and two granddaughters. Nothing unusual about that. What happened next was very unusual and potentially life altering for everyone involved. They arrived in Syracuse in the late evening, without having made hotel reservations, they had to call each hotel and ask for an available room. At that time of the evening and with people returning to travel, they were having a hard time finding a room. They usually stayed at a Holiday Inn on 11 North. As they turned toward the hotel, t...

  • Painting Our Way Out of a Corner

    Aug 12, 2021

It’s normal to tune out all the Chicken Littles (such as yours truly) who run around squawking about this or that invasive forest pest or disease that pose a threat to trees. I mean, how many times can the sky fall, anyway? But the real danger is when we feel so overwhelmed that we throw up our hands. Thinking we can’t make a difference could result in more harm to forests than the pests themselves. There’s a pithy fable about a child who rescues starfish from the beach after storms, and some busybody informs the kid that they can’t save al...

  • What New York State Legislators Got Done On Climate This Year

    Aug 12, 2021

The CLCPA commits New York to a fully renewable-fueled electrical grid by 2040, and net-zero carbon emissions in the overall economy by 2050. But without legislation to support concrete decarbonization plans nor revenue to fund the...

Seminole/Muscogee Creek filmmaker - and now showrunner - Sterlin Harjo called me from the cab of his pickup truck while he was out running errands around Tulsa, Oklahoma. It's a town he loves in a state he loves, the place where he has made most of his films. And the feeling is reciprocated; he now has a spot on the Oklahoma Walk of Fame, just in front of the city's local art-house...
