Peter Back has been busy as he competed in his two latest tournaments bringing home trophies. On June 9th he competed at South New Berlin Open and came home with a victory. Following that one, he entered Pine Grove Open on July 27th of this year. Again, it was a championship, but not until breaking a draw with a man called James. They each only had 1 loss so the tie had to be broken. After these matches, Pete had a standing record of 8 wins to one loss. Quite impressive, Mr. Back. Peter has...

Dear Editor, She:kon. I am writing to memorialize Edgar Jock, who passed over on August 5, 2013. As his funeral plans were being made by his family, while I visited them on Jock Road in Akwesasne, so he could be laid out at the Kanienkehaka Kaianerehkowa Kanonhsesne, I heard many stories about this proud man. Edgar’s 19 natural and chosen children’s lives were profoundly altered by this proud World War Two veteran of the United States Army and its battle against Nazi Germany. As a member of the...
To Whom it May Concern, The children of Christine and Mike Arquette are with me and Donna in our tragedy. We lost our son, Tyson, due to negligence of the Tribal Compliance office and Council by not stopping Tony Laughing’s beer parlor from serving people no matter how intoxicated they are. Just because the Tribal Council took away Tony’s license does not mean they were not responsible for our son’s death or care. My wife and I were totally heart broken and still are. The court hearings treated us like it was nothing to lose our son on his 21st...
Internalized Oppression Oppression is the exercise of authority or power in a burdensome or unjust manner. The current Canadian government has made laws to usurp the sovereignty of Onkwehonwe people during the past few years. As a people we have failed in taking action in dealing with these issues. Do we feel powerless in making our feelings and thoughts known to the federal government? How do we as a people let the government know what we demand as a people native to this land that we call Turtle Island? Our protests, hunger strikes and...

The biggest deal to the boys about summer vacation is being able to sleep in. They get to most of the time except the mornings that little brother has speech in the morning. That is a challenge because not only do I have to get one brother up but both, and Big Brother is so not a morning type of person. He counted down the days to the last day of school not because there was no more school but because he wanted to wake up when he felt like it, not have a schedule to keep. Imagine how disappointed he was when he found out that on some mornings...

As Mohawks we are taught from infancy to honour our elders, abide by the traditional teachings and accept our ancient values as given to us across the generations. One of the most profound instructions, which should be the foundation for all of our laws, is to do no harm to the rights of the unborn unto the seventh generation. This means our descendants have the legal right to the basics of life: clean air, pure waters, and fertile lands. It also gives us the obligation to preserve that which makes the Mohawk people distinct. It includes not...
