In the distant past our ancestors performed initiation ceremonies for boys and girls who were transforming into young adults. This monumental event was not only critical to the success of a child but ensured the health and prosperity of the tribe. Giving up a childhood to become an adult is a transition that everyone must undergo. In the course of this natural change instruction is always given by the elders while the entire community participates to help bring their young consciously into...

Letter to the Editor, The community is free, yes, we are a free Tribe hard to believe but true. The defunct three chiefs never appealed the voting of the five Spokespersons nor did they appeal the referendum, of July 5, 2008, which is the only method that is recognized as our standard procedures as a duly federal recognized Tribe. Of course I would never have told my possible ‘yes’ votes to stay home and not vote and I would have had the appeal process at the ready if the ‘no’ votes were victorious but that’s me. It would only take a marble to...

The summer months are about cookouts, spending time with family, and of course swimming. The safety of swimming in Akwesasne is at the center of an ongoing project of the Water Resources Program of the Tribe. This article is intended to provide general information about the health risks to swimmers and recommendations to swim safely. What are the health risks? The main risk to swimmers of all ages is through ingestion of river water containing pathogenic bacteria—symptoms can include headaches, vomiting, and fever. Of course, any ingestion o...
Submitted by Les Benedict, St. Regis Mohawk Tribe, Environment Division In the quiet hours of Saturday morning, July 26, 2008 a white mobile home turned into the Tribal parking lot. What at first looked like a vacationing RV’s soon revealed itself as a mobile animal clinic, with the slogan, “Stop Littering” and decals of cats and dogs rather than the usual state sticker maps. The mobile clinic, known also as the Spay, Neuter, Now, Neuter Commuter was greeted by several sleepy eyed but anxio...

With the rains we have had lately there is one scary looking bug found crawling outside our homes and sometimes inside our homes. It’s the “earwig.” They are an elongated, flattened insect with adults ranging from light red-brown to black in color. They measure anywhere from half an inch to an inch long. They are easily identified by their forcep-like pincers at the end of their abdomen. They have mouth parts that chew and slender, long antennae. Some earwigs are wingless while others may have wings. While earwigs may sometimes have wings,...

Continued from last week Now (Bride), I begin with you. You have chosen this man to be your husband. This means that you are prepared to be his wife for the rest of your life. Is this the way you understand? In all communities there are men/women who gossip and carry rumors, this the Creator forbids. In your marriage, when your husband may be away hunting or working and you are home alone, it may be then that men/women may come to your house and say that your husband is away and he has another...

I got to go to an underwater rescue and recovery course held in Saranac Lake for SCUBA divers. This was a three day course that included multiple dives including a night dive. The instructor was a well seasoned dive master and he had been involved in a lot of rescues and recoveries throughout his career including a number of homicide investigations in the New York City area. He brought with him an assistant, an English émigré, who looked like a California surfer dude and sounded like Pierce Brosnan. He would be the diver, ready to go, if one o...
Baby T has pulled some outright brilliant acts in his world. He has also come up with the best comebacks to my demands. I suppose I have grown accustomed to the things he throws at me (not literally he knows better). And even though I sometimes do not have the answer for everything he asks I am to him the “knobbier” of everything when in fact he seems to know it all. I spent Sunday with my grandma and I could have told her about all the things that he has done to tell me off in a nice way all day. The list, it seems to go on forever. That lis...
