After eleven years of negotiating for the release of these donations to the Akwesasne business people, an agreement has been reached by the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal Council and the Mohawk Anti-Tax Steering Committee. Coordinated by the MATSC in 2010, formal requests were made by many businesses for the return of their donations to the Mohawk...

    MJKS|Aug 3, 2017

After years of extremes of hot and cold offices, constantly breathing in dust and working in cramped and poorly lit offices, the Planning and Infrastructure staff now appreciate their spacious and well lit work place at the Planning and Infrastructure Building located on Route 95. Most of all they can breathe clean air. Their previous work place was the former Akwesasne Hogansburg Volunteer Fire Department building located on River Street in the center of Hogansburg. The 11,600-square-foot...

  • Tom Porter and the Roles of Men and Women

    Kaniehtonkie|Aug 3, 2017

In what was billed as “History and the Traditional Roles for Men and Women,” Tom Porter used his most recent trip to Montana as a footing to talk to a group of rapt listeners on Friday, July 28, 2017. Using his trip, he shared his wisdom and humor in a way that only Porter can while he talked about roles for men, women, young parents, elders, medicine societies and more. Porter’s trip to Montana is a story in itself. Years ago he met Bob Staffanson, a world-renowned orchestrator who assembled a group of financial backers and supporters to fu...

  • Geraldine (Martin) Gray

    Aug 3, 2017

When tomorrow starts without me; Please try to understand, that an owl called my name, And took me by the hand, and said my place was ready; So much left undone and unsaid; Please don’t worry for I am with the Creator; When tomorrow starts without me, know that no one ever really dies, They just change form. I was blind, but now I see....

  • Correction

    Aug 3, 2017

Due to wrong information reported by New York State Police, the July 27 edition of Indian Time incorrectly reported that a Hogansburg woman was charged with multiple counts, including two felonies, following a traffic stop. The police blotter entry should have stated that Catherine R. Martin, 26, was charged with a single misdemeanor count of child endangerment and released under probationary supervision after arraignment in Waddington Town Court. She was a passenger in a vehicle at the time of the alleged incident that led to the charge. The...

The recreation centers at Tsi Snaihne and Kawehnoke open their doors for students to play, learn, make new friends and generally get away from the X-Box over these long hot summer days. Over 50 students were enrolled at each of the Northern portion summer programs while the Akwesasne Boys and Girls Club also ran their summer program, which wrapped up this week. All enjoyed making arts and crafts, field trips,...

  • Re: Doing Away with the Indian Act by Canada's Federal Government

    Aug 3, 2017

As a full-blooded Mohawk from the Caughnawaga (Kahnawake) Indian Reservation, in Quebec, Canada, I wish to speak to my Indian brothers and sisters across Canada, and to the Canadian Government. I wish to state categorically that the proposed destruction of the Department of Indian (Aboriginal Affairs) is totally illegal and immoral. Once Canadians realize what is really happening, they will rise up in disgust at this outrage, Canadians for a 150 years have been known around the world as a law abiding society, and believed in upholding Indian Tr...

  • Two-Row Wampum

    Aug 3, 2017

Reprinted from Wampum Belts of the Iroquois by Tehanetorens This belt symbolizes the agreement and conditions under which the Iroquois welcomed the white people to this land "You say that you are our Father and I am your son." We say, "We will not be like Father and Son, but like Brothers. This wampum belt confirms our words. These two rows will symbolize two paths or two vessels, traveling down the same river together. One, a birch bark canoe, will be for the Indian People, their laws, their...

  • Cannabis Is Good Business, But Is it Good for Native Culture?

    Aug 3, 2017

Reprinted with permission from ICMT July 31, 2017. The topic of cannabis and the celebration of the 2017 Canoe Journey/Paddle to We Wai Kai and Wei Wai Kum seemed a strange juxtaposition. The Canoe Journey has done much to promote sobriety and healthy living among young Native people, and yet some pullers represent Native Nations that have gone into the cannabis business: The Suquamish Tribe owns Agate Dreams, a successful retail cannabis store on Highway 305 on the Kitsap Peninsula, west of Seattle; The Squaxin Island Tribe owns Elevation, a...
