    The St. Regis Mohawk Tribe held nominations Saturday morning for a special election of a sub-chief. The caucus was held at the tribal community building and a total of eight nominations were made for the position. The sub-chief position up for election was filled at the regular June election, but the winning candidate opted not to be sworn-in, requiring the Tribal Election Board to scramble and come up with an alternative plan.     Several teams from Akwesasne are western bound this weekend to represent the Mohawk Nation at the North American Indigenous Games. Dozens of athletes will depart Akwesasne on Friday for the games, being hosted this year by Cowichan, British Columbia, from August 3 - 10.Local athletes are part of Team Eastern Door, which also includes Kahnawake participants.     An Akwesasne man jailed for his role in smuggling marijuana across the U.S. – Canada border was sentenced last week to 63 months in federal prison. Sam “Pud” Garrow, 34 pleaded guilty in two separate drug dealing cases. In the first, Garrow admitted to having a role in the transport of 1,540 lbs. of marijuana between 2003 and 2004. U.S. District Attorney Glenn Suddaby said the drugs were then distributed to New Jersey, Massachusetts, Albany and New York City.     Valleyfield, Tuesday, July 29, 2008 – Royal Canadian Mounted Police officers from the St. Lawrence Valley Detachment – Valleyfield Office, in partnership with the Sûreté du Québec, seized marihuana, $55,000 in cash and three firearms during a search conducted in Saint-Anicet on July 24, 2008.     Some of the calls we get from time to time are to help our fellow responders at emergency calls. Of these a lot come from the ambulance service to help transfer patients. I have gone on a number of these calls and it’s usually a minor affair in which they need just a little more muscle to get the job done. It is always best to ask for help than to go it alone and get hurt. This community does produce some large customers for the ambulance crews. This phenomenon is known as “Mohawk Medium”.
