The Akwesasne Olympic Torch Relay Organizing Committee notified a community member last week that he has been selected to be the sole carrier of the Olympic Torch when it makes its way through Akwesasne this winter. The Olympic Games will be held in Vancouver in February of 2010. Submitted by Jenny Thompson On Wednesday July 22, Hiio Herne and Quade Smoke of Akwesasne traveled to Boston, Massachusetts to play in the 2009 Senior Chowder Cup for the Metcalfe Jets. The duo helped their team to win the championship, defeating 55 other teams from across the U.S. and Canada. Herne and Smoke participated in the College Open Division. Thank you, An amazing event happened this past Saturday at Cedar View Golf course, it was HUNTER’S HOPE CYSTIC FIBROSIS ANNUAL GOLF TOURNAMENT. A great turnout with a total of 106 players. So Canada pulled a fast one by ignoring the Mohawk leadership and openning a temporary customs check point in Cornwall. This is all too typical of a government which treats Native people as irritants and liabilities. The former United States Customs Building in Rooseveltown/Massena was bulldozed this week. The old, empty building was vacated just last month when the U.S Customs and Border Protection Agency moved into their new multi-million dollar facility on the same property.
