  • A world away

    An Anonymous Mother|Jul 24, 2008

This weekend our little family had the pleasure of relaxing on Stanley Island. Baby T’s paternal family owns a cabin out there and we made plans to stay for a day or two. After extensive packing on my part, we ended up with a suitcase of clothes for the three of us, and sadly most of it was Baby T’s. The morning we were getting ready to go I was all stressed out because I wanted the house to be clean before we shipped out and with the packing-unpacking war I was having with Baby T it wasn’t happening. When it was time to pack a bag for Baby...

  • And Grandma Said…

    Tom Porter|Jul 24, 2008

The Iroquois culture and traditional Longhouse spirituality has a universal appeal, a ring of truth to it that resonates not only with other indigenous people, but also with non-Native people searching for their own spiritual roots. Raised in the home of a grandmother who spoke only Mohawk, Sakokweniónkwas (Tom Porter) was asked from a young age, to translate for his elders. After such intensive exposure to his grandparents’ generation, he is able to recall in vivid detail, the stories and ceremonies of a culture hovering on the brink of ex...

  • Pirates!

    Adrian McDonald|Jul 24, 2008

We have some strange calls from time to time that the dispatch center accuses us of making up stuff just to roll the trucks. It’s even more interesting since some of our calls are on the river. This makes us unique since we are the only department in the country that has an international seaway running through it. We cover the St. Lawrence River from the Snell Locks to east of Lake St. Francis. That’s a huge area if you take a look at it on a map or if you’ve ever been out there on a boat. One night after grassfire season we had a huge drop...

  • Live to Fight Another Day

The Akwesasne Jr. A Indians staved off elimination in game 5 at home and forced a game 6 to go in Burlington on Tuesday. A convincing 12-4 victory over the Burlington Chiefs on Sunday swung the momentum of the series back in Akwesasne’s favour. “That’s the first game this series where we played an entire 60 minutes, “ commented head coach Adam Thompson. “Joe [Tallis] was huge for us in nets and the offence clicked for us.” The series has been mired in controversy as after getting a win in game...
