The Iroquois Nationals didn’t make it to England. The lacrosse team was forced to abandon their spot at the FIL World Lacrosse Championships when England refused to accept the team’s Haudenosaunee passports. The team received worldwide support and while the United States had initially said they wouldn’t honor the passports either, they granted a “one-time waiver” to allow the team to go to England, but England refused to budge on their own position. The Iroquois Nationals teams is comprised...

The old Hemlock homestead at the corner of St. Regis Road and First Street was torn down and cleared out as owner Jimmy Hemlock said it was too old to fix up anymore. He estimates that the house was built in the late 1800s and for many years until the mid 1970s it was a general store. Hemlock said he has...

According to Casino statistics 45% of our Akwesasne Mohawk Casino patrons come from Vermont (4%) and Canada (40%). Last year when the bridges were blocked our Casino revenue dropped dramatically. While our Casino has remained in the black through that crisis and its continuing residual affects, the events of one year ago surrounding the International Bridge at Cornwall has proven that if we are to remain in the Casino business we must broaden our market base locally and regionally. That would mean in order to maintain a reliable secondary...
A couple of weeks ago I gave a lecture at the Nor’wester in Williamstown, Ontario entitled “How the Mohawks Saved Canada”. The presentation was meant to remind Canadians that their very existence as an independent country would not have been possible without the military, economic and political contributions of the Iroquois Confederacy, and, more specifically, the Mohawk Nation Our mutual history began in 1664 when England assumed control over the Dutch colony of New Netherlands, renaming it New York. The English authorities knew that if they...

A typical weekday with errands almost never goes as planned with the brothers in tow. We had to make three stops so I figured all afternoon would be about how long it would take. After forcing the boys to eat lunch for about an hour we finally hit the road when I calculated that they had eaten enough and would indeed last at least through a wait at the canadian customs if there was one and one scheduled stop. I got a few minutes down the road when Big Brother started begging to stop at a store on the way, any store. Little Brother being a full...
