    Jun 27, 2013

AUGUST 9, 1992-JUNE 27, 2011 It will be two years on June 27, when we lost our Baby Dickie. A son, brother, grandson, nephew, cousin and friend, missing your smiling face and your laughter. Each day we think of you with our eyes filled with tears. Even though we still have those fond memories and pictures of you, our lives are not the same without you. • Letter to the Editor

    Jun 27, 2013

Letter to the Editor Community of Akwesasne We have had such a disaster at our new senior center in Hogansburg. It didn’t affect some of us, but it sure did to a lot of our elders that come to the center everyday. These elders depend on this hot lunch, and now they’re getting a bag lunch. In this whole community, didn’t anybody look into other options to be able to feed our elders properly? Look at the food that’s prepared everyday at the casino. It could be prepared and served at another place, like the fire station or Kateri Hall. Fort Co...

  • Letter to the Editor

    Jun 27, 2013

I am writing this letter in response to the June 20th letter to the editor from Michael Conners Jr., Sub-Chief for the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe. I am disappointed by the decision of Mr. Conners, a community leader, to perpetuate misconceptions which encourage feelings of distrust based on race. The Salmon River Central School District employs the most Native American professionals in the State of New York. Mr. Conners’ claim of “discrimination” in this situation devalues tenured Native American professionals dedicated to the education of our c...

  • Letter to the Editor

    Jun 27, 2013

In the May 23, 2013, issue of Indian Time, the “Moving of the Fire” in 1994 story was reprinted. I thought about whether I should respond to this reprint again as I have had to do many times before. The story brings back such pain and hurt from that period of time that it could be left untold. The movement of a portion of the Longhouse Followers was not the movement of the “Fire”, but a split in theological beliefs of the People of Longhouse. The move was a culmination of activity that for many, many years, fermented and is unrelated to anyt...

  • Just a Shame

    Samantha McMillon Wilkinson|Jun 27, 2013

This isn’t the first time that Sandra J. Terrancel has had trouble with her land. She has been battling various agencies for years over a tract of property. But this time it’s more about decency and common sense. Twenty, yes about 20 years ago, Sandra planted a row of cedar trees on the edge of her property by the road. For years she cared for them and watched as they grew tall and thickened, forming the privacy barrier she always wanted. In one morning they were gone. She thought she heard a n...

    An Anonymous Mom|Jun 27, 2013

I see you, the mom with a carload of kids doing it on her own. I just want you to know you’re setting a great example of perseverance and determination to those kids you’re carting around. I just wish the smile I send your way could send that message. I see you, the tired mom who was up all night with a sick baby. I know it’s not easy to sleep sitting up in a rocking...
