On June 16, 2011, a hearing was held before Federal Magistrate George Lowe on whether New York State motions to dismiss the Mohawk Land Claim should be granted. At the heart of the matter is whether the rulings in the City of Sherrill v. Oneida Indian Nation, Cayuga Indian Nation v. Pataki, and Oneida Indian Nation v. county of Oneida apply to the Mohawk land claim. These court rulings set bad precedents for Indian Land Claims across the United States. They basically said that because land claims are inherently disruptive to the White people...

Letter to the Editor: In response to the letter from Agnes Terrance printed in your June 9, 2011 edition, I would like to respond to what I feel are some very serious misrepresentations. First, Ms. Terrance attributes this three chief government to roots in the Iroquois constitution, not true: the BIA set up this three chief government on Feb. 7, 2000. The original three chief government was voted out of existence by the people in a referendum vote on June 3, 1995 by a vote of 463 “YES” and 446 “NO” a difference of 17 votes. The vote was affirm...

Today Canada celebrates “National Aboriginal Day”--Canada’s affirmation of the rights of Indigenous People. On June 13, 1996 Governor General Romeo Leblanc declared June 21 “National Aboriginal Day.” Though the media claims the date was selected after the Governor General consulted with Indigenous leaders there is clearly an historical reason for choosing the first day of summer as Canada’s day to honour Indigenous People. On June 21, 1880 Indigenous leaders on the Six Nations Indian Reserve adopted the Indian Act. On that day Canada beca...
Decades after fish and wildlife advisories went into effect, industrial pollutants found in the blood of Native American youths and young adults show that the younger generation is still at risk from long-banned contaminants. Teenagers from the Akwesasne Mohawk Nation in New York state had PCB concentrations twice the national average, when compared to a U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention national survey. Significantly higher amounts were found in first borns, those who were breast-fed and those who ate fish in the prior year....
Many people we surveyed fell far short of eating five a day, and skimped on variety. About 70 percent of us fail to eat five servings of fruit and vegetables every day, the low end of the amount recommended by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. That’s a shame, because doing so can reduce the risk of heart attacks, strokes, type 2 diabetes, and some cancers. The good news is that 58 percent of U.S. adults do say they eat the prescribed amount “every day” or “most days” of the week. Those findings are from a recent survey by the Consumer...
With the official start of summer, the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne’s Community Health Program is going green with the Tetewatska:hon Green Food Box Program. This program is open to all Akwesasro:non, regardless of residency, and provides a non-profit, fresh fruit and vegetable distribution system that is available for purchase. This program is ‘green’ in that it provides seasonal fruits and vegetables grown from local markets, which reduces the carbon footprint associated with transporting out-of-season crops. The cost for each box is $10.0...

The Cortland County Legislature is moving forward with plans to create a regional landfill to import millions of tons of garbage, including NYC waste, despite protest by the Onondaga Nation that it will destroy another treasured Indian site. Members of the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) Confederacy have pledged to demonstrate at the next legislative meeting slated for June 23. Seneca and Mohawk nation representatives are coming from locations across New York State to join the Onondaga, all of whom have had to deal with issues of toxic waste. The...
This week we’re going to learn about some household solutions from the medicine cabinet. This is a sure way to save some money that can be used on fun summer activities for your children. Just take the time to look in your medicine cabinet or kitchen and see if you have the following household solutions. Listerine: that’s right the awful tasting mouthwash, Listerine kills household germs. Just mix half of Listerine original and one half water in a spray bottle and spritz away the bacteria. The other use of Listerine is getting rid of mold. Spr...
