In an unprecedented political scene, a record number of Native Americans are running for state and national seats. Even more significant is the number of female Native American candidates. One stand out candidate is Deb Haaland from New Mexico who is ready to become the first Native American congresswoman in November's vote. Haaland stated, "I've always fought for women like us. Women of color. Single moms. Lesbians and transwomen military families. Any woman who has ever been assaulted or...

We are all too familiar with this. With residential school still in our shared memories, its hard to imagine your child being torn from your arms and then not knowing where your child is being taken to. After that, will you be reunited with your child again? Ever? According to national media, up to 2000 children in the past two months have been separated from their parents and or guardians once they entered the U.S. border. Many are being warehoused in former big box stores, others are being transported to tent cities along the U.S. Mexican...

We would like to take this opportunity to thank the wonderful staff of the MCA Home Support Program. Starting with Lesley Bero, help came immediately and without hesitation. Sheila Adams and the staff at the pharmacy please know that all of your efforts did not go un-noticed. Through all of the changes and ups and downs, you made everything so easy on us; we would have been lost without you! There was a lot...
A school board member is a person who is willing to serve the total school district. A person committed to improve the education for all students. It is also important that candidates are aware of the role of the board of education, the role of the superintendent and the role of the building principals. Accordingly, open lines of communication between the above mentioned are crucial, as they will make decisions that will impact the entire school district. The candidates should know that one cannot improve one entity without making needed...
A good majority of the members of the SRC school district community have voiced their concerns and shared their ideas for a school board with me during my time spent canvassing our district. Many community members expressed that it was time to steer the board into a new direction, that new voices needed to be heard, and that a new energy is needed to assure the many - and not a few - district shareholders are represented. I enthusiastically agree! I believe that students are the Number 1 priority in our School District and I want to make our...
The landscape of learning is always changing. The SRCS Board of Education needs to be vigilant about pursuing cutting edge programming to help our students compete on the world stage -- this school district needs members of the Board of Education that will support this charge. We need to maintain the confidence in the leadership and have a renewed understanding of the school board’s role in the school district -- there’s a delicate balance between the board’s act of choosing a strong Superintendent and letting him or her lead the way, and the b...

(June 14, 2018) The Akwesasne Mohawk Police Service (AMPS) is cautioning the community once again of continued aggressive phone calls being made from persons identifying themselves to be with the Canadian Revenue Agency, or other various government agencies. These individuals are calling area residents from what appears to be local numbers, advising that local police will be arresting them because they owe money to the Canada Revenue Agency. The victims are contacted by someone pretending to be with the Canada Revenue Agency or other...
