On Thursday, June 13th, the St. Regis Mohawk School held a graduation ceremony for the Pre-Kindergarten class. The students walked in to the traditional “Pomp and Circumstance” and took their places on the risers. Students then sang three songs to a very packed house. They sang, “I Like You, There’s No Doubt About It,” “I Wish I Had A Little Red Box” and “It Is Time To Say Good-Bye.” Then the most important part, each student was handed a diploma from Principal Sharlee Thomas. Following the cer...
It was the last Student Achievement Assembly of the school year at the St. Regis Mohawk School on Wednesday morning, June 12th. Principal Thomas directed a contest between the students and staff; whoever was most excited for summer – scream the loudest, and it was pretty darn close with students surely out-numbering staff. I’d say the staff was pretty darn excited! The assembly started by recognizing students who won the ipad minis for selling raffle tickets. Ticket sales are important for the...

Dear Monica, Can you suggest any online coupon saving websites? Thanks, Enska Penny Pincher Dear Enska Penny Pincher, Don’t forget our local library in Akwesasne also provides clipped coupons. For the items that I purchase the most in our household, I actually go to the manufacturer’s website to find coupons or you can email them and ask for a coupon. I also go to the Apple App Store on my iOS devices and search for “coupon shopping” or similar, to find mobile apps that help me save money while shopping. I currently use GeoQpons, Coupons, and G...
You know how as a mother you feel like a broken record? All the times you repeat yourself. I am endlessly saying, “no don’t do that” and then “ok it’s time to do this.” If I had to actually add up every time I said certain phrases I’m sure it would be in the thousands. I receive mean looks in the grocery store when someone sees my 4 year old sitting on the floor in a time out. I don’t care where, who or how come, a stranger may think I’m ridiculous for publicly enforcing rules. By five Big Brother was excellent and no longer needed a hundred...

Herbs and spices are an easy way to liven up all your meals, but did you know they have many other uses as well? By giving your herbs and spices double duty you are expanding their practical use by boosting your health and saving money at the same time. Spices are vegetables in concentrated form, and like veggies, they contain thousands of healthy phytonutrient compounds, including antioxidants. As an added bonus spices are calorie-free and require no prep. The best herbs are fresh, preferably grown in your garden to ensure they are free from...
Albany, NY —A state legislator says federal data shows tornadoes have increased across New York over the past 60 years and he’s calling for a better system to warn people to take shelter from the high-speed winds. The frequency rose through the next four decades and there were 144 over the past 15 years. The report acknowledged New York’s history with tornadoes is much less sever...

As the War of 1812 dragged on through the spring of 1813 many Iroquois were uncertain as to which side they should fight. The British forces had suffered defeats when the colonial capital at York (now Toronto) was captured and burned on April 27 followed by the loss of Ft. George to the American forces on May 25. These victories placed the Iroquois at Ohsweken and the Mohawks of Tyendinaga, Akwesasne and Kahnawake in a delicate, vulnerable position. The American strategy was initially designed to attack the British garrison at Kingston thereby...
