The 6th Annual Native Student Film Festival was held this past Monday morning, which was well attended by Akwesasne community members and students. Reports have been circulating of 500 police officers from three different agencies taking part in a major police operation coordinated between Kanehsatake, Akwesasne, Oka, Montreal and the North Shore targeting a major drug trafficking operation. At the end of May, Akwesasne hosted a delegation of Choctaw traveling from Mississippi for a cultural exchange of each nation’s medicine games. 51 people from the Choctaw territory traveled by bus, stopping first in Kanienke to visit that community before finally traveling here to Akwesasne. They were greeted by a ceremony at dawn conducted by the men’s council. Andrew (Andy) L. Bero, age 64, of 41 Seymour Road and Hilltop Drive in Akwesasne, was born in Frogtown on August 8, 1946, the fourth of eight children born to Angus and Mildred Bero.
