Fiduciary responsibility of the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne has at least 4 components that include the following: Avoiding conflicts of interest, acting in the interest of MCA rather than a member’s personal interest, providing oversight to assure that all MCA business is transacted legally and making decisions to protect the assets of MCA. I wonder about their responsibility in the OPG settlement. Two of the islands that are being returned are not remediated. Is that not the responsibility of the negotiators to ensure that the lands were r...

Letter to the Editor Sekon sewakwekon, I am writing this letter to express my concerns regarding CKON’s board members. In the past few weeks, there has been a lot of talk about certain employees who were fired from our community radio, by the board. I, like many community members, am shocked and in disbelief that these dedicated workers have lost their jobs. I have worked with Judy and Beverly when it came time to purchase ads. They were very friendly and gave the best service. I was amazed by the way Kevin made all his ads sound so p...
I find I have no choice but to respond to the community announcement aired on CKON on June 6, 2012. It saddens me to know that these former board members are trying to discredit a decision that you “the community” made at four legal, advertised, recorded meetings that they chose not to attend. The former board members have been in office for the past 11 years now; I find it very strange that after 11 years they are finally attempting to have an annual meeting. Is it because the community was made aware of these issues and they are trying to...
Letter to the community June 6, 2012 I want to inform the community with a list of things that happened to me the morning of May 29, 2012 at CKON after going to the doctor’s office at the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe. 1) I saw Melanie Jacobs there and she asked what I was up to. I told her I had a doctor’s appointment and then I was going to work. Melanie told me I should call Larry first. I asked why? She said: you just need to call Larry before you go in. I didn’t think much of it at the time, as I was preoccupied with getting in the clinic. 2) Up...
Isaac has been a certified EMT since 2006 and an advanced EMT-Critical Care for two years. He says the best part of his job is that everyday is different, “We have a routine checklist, but every call is different.” The hardest part of his job is treating good friends and family, but at the same time it can be rewarding because he’s helping them and maybe even saving their life. He declared the ultimate goal of AMA is to serve the community by providing the best possible care. Isaac said, “For...
NIAWEN When someone loses their home to a fire, the losses are great and damage extreme, but if no one was injured that is success. The family of Frank Leaf would like to send a big NIAWEN KOWA out to the Akwesasne Mohawk Police, Bill Lafrance and Hennes Porter. And a special NIAWEN KOWA to Officer Pete Lafrance for noticing the fire and making the call. Many thanks also goes out to HAVFD and the firemen that assisted; Ben Benedict, Isaac McDonald, Mike Adams, Richard Phillips, Russell Phillips, Clint Jacobs, Darren Cook Jr., Ryan Jacobs and...
Saturday night The Gambill family held a youth dance for ages 10-14 at the Kateri Hall. When asked, Sean Gambill said, “We’re just a family looking to bring entertainment to youth. We see there is a need for it, they really don’t have much to do, and it gives them a place to come and try their moves out.” “We got started because the kids didn’t have anything to do. They both love to sing, but never had a place to go and sing, so we started to go to youth contests, talent shows, they started sing...

The ice cream social was held to entertain the residents and it helps pass the time for them. Weekends at Iakhihsohtha can be long for the residents, and with less staff to cover the weekends, eve...

It is tough to win a game when the lacrosse gods do their best to hand the match over to a team which is playing far beyond anyone’s expectations. The Homer Trojans are as sharp a contrast against the Shamrocks as there can be. The ‘rocks are fast, physical and have stickhandling skills which dazzle fans, frustrate goalies and leave their opponents stunned. The team has an attack line which can thread the ball through tight defenses and score which off stance and flying in front of the net. The...
