  • What was life like at Akwesasne in the year 1300?

    Doug George-Kanentiio|Jun 11, 2020

By Doug George-Kanentiio A recent question came up in the Quora forum asking what life was like in North America in the year 1300. This is my response for Akwesasne specifically: Breathing clean air, drinking pure water, great fishing and hunting, plenty of food, no religion, lots of leisure time, wonderful camping and swimming, no jails, no schools, no starvation, no “lords”, no masters, no corrupt popes or predatory priests, no social or economic classes, no pollution, abundance of animals, plants and trees, no kings, no castles or chu...

  • Hot Sounds

    Jun 11, 2020

Submitted by Paul Hetzler Probably everyone has a sound they associate with high summer. For me, nothing says “holy cow, it’s hot” like the drone of a cicada, its song a miniature buzz saw that cuts across a hot afternoon, undulating a bit and then dropping off near the end of its arc. Cicadas are stout, ancient-looking bugs with bulgy eyes and clear wings. While the largest species is about three inches long and has a seven-inch wingspan, the ones in our neck of the woods range from 1 to 2.5 inches in length with a wingspan of three inche...

  • "Defund the Police" movement

    Kaniehtonkie|Jun 11, 2020

Police reacting violently to a movement rooted in ending police brutality. Given large metropolis cities long long history of gratuitous violence, racism, and little accountability, funding for...

  • Tips on Gardening

    Jun 11, 2020

    1. Plot Your Success Experienced gardeners may be comfortable planting big fields of their favorite crops. Skye has a nearly 1-acre plot just downhill of his Standing Rock home. But if this is your gardening debut—as it was for some tribal members he provided with gardens through the CDC project—ensure success by starting small. Try a few pots or raised beds, or perhaps a small in-ground plot, with easy-to-grow plants, he says. Good options might be tomatoes, peppers, green beans, radishes, summer and winter squash, onions, or leafy greens. “Do...
