The Akwesasne Cancer Support Group held their annual 5th Annual Walk/Run on April 28, 2013. The event was a big success. Our success is always dependent on the community and they came through again for the 5th year. Our total this year was $15,000. Thank You, On Friday May 31st, a “Living Rosary” was held at the St. Regis Church to culminate the end of the May devotions to our Mother, the Blessed Virgin Mary. What a beautiful ceremony it was! Each person was given a packet with a rosary, prayer cards, and a carnation when they came in. Letter to the Editor, I thought I’d take a few minutes to reflect on this year’s Tribal Elections and give a local youth Brett Hart a big thumbs up for getting involved, even if it was just to take the time to do a radio announcement promoting a candidate, so what that it happened to be his uncle, the point is he got involved. The Big Bike ride raises funds to put lifesaving defibrillators in public venues and community centers across Canada. On Thursday, May 30, the Akwesasne Fancy Dancers held a mini-powwow at Generations Park. The event was to give fancy dance class students a chance to strut their stuff. The powwow had youth ages 3-12 participate, all dressed in their regalia and shawls. Back on April 27th, Swamp’s Performance Automotive held Cruisin’ for Kids, an event to raise money for the Akwesasne Boys & Girls Club and the Akwesasne Freedom School. On Friday, Headstart students from the Kanatakon School put on a presentation for parents. Students have been working hard all year with Kakwiroton Cook, and teachers Anen Wheesk and Kanerahtaroroks Francis-Herne. The recited the Opening Address, sang a couple of traditional songs and danced too. They also performed a song called Ohkwari Tare.
