  • Okwari:kowa

    Kanietakeron|Jun 5, 2008

Continued from last week... The whole village feared the giant bear.  At night they kept close to the fire because bears, for some reason, are afraid of fire.  The people in the village could hear the bear’s loud call as he circled the settlement in the darkness.  Each night the bear circled closer.  The people knew if the bear became hungry enough, he would enter the village and eat the people. One night, three brothers had a powerful dream.  Their dreams were exactly the same.  They dreamt...

  • Summer Solstice - The First Day of Summer

    Jun 5, 2008

Summer solstice is the first day of summer - it’s usually between June 20th to June 23rd. To be precise, the summer solstice takes place on June 21st this year, at 6:06PM GMT. We know it’s summer because the earth’s axis tilts towards the sun from June to September - this means warmer weather and longer days. For people who live in the Southern Hemisphere, (basically the other side of the world from North America), they will have colder weather and shorter days. Summer Solstice - Longest Day Summer solstice is the longest day of the year....

  • Maple trees - helicopters to guitars

    Barbara Gray|Jun 5, 2008

I remember when I was a youngster; my brother and I would run under and around our maple trees and chase after polypodys. As the wind blew, they flew like helicopters from the trees around our home. I looked up polypodys on the Internet, but what I found was nothing like the things we called polypodys. I found they are actually called samaras or maple keys. Some people call them helicopters or whirligigs while others call them polynoses. Perhaps that is why I called them polypodys. A samara is...

  • Tales From the Station

    Adrian McDonald|Jun 5, 2008

When bad weather hits we can usually be found at the fire station waiting out a storm. One summer day the alarm went off and we were told to man our stations due to a severe storm heading right for us. We were sitting at the station and the radio starts going crazy. A tornado touched down in another town and their firefighters were watching it reporting the location and reporting damage. Luckily this region has a whole lot of nothing with some buildings here and there. The tornado touched down in an open field and meandered around digging up br...
