In the scientific world, many experts felt that at least 4,000 to 5,000 years ago, Sunflowers were a cultivated food crop in what is now the eastern United States. It was believed that Sunflower farming spread south from eastern North America to Mexico. However, another later study discovered Sunflower plant remains in a dry cave in Mexico that were at least from the year 2600 BC leading to a hypothesis that assumed the farming of Sunflowers began in Mexico and moved northward. The new Mexico...

Reprinted from Kakhwakon Cookbook Recipes, sponsored by Mohawk Indian Housing Corporation A BRIEF HISTORY OF CORN Ancient corn was began by Native Americans who developed the founding species. Two plants were grafted together. One plant was a grass for the stem and leaves and the other of another origin for the ears. It is believed this took place in Central America developing over a 2,500 year period to bring corn to its recognizable stages as we know it today. It is a tropical variety known strictly as a warm weather crop and must be grown...

Everybody who goes to bingo has their favorite things they have to take to every game. My friend brings a colorful insulated mug and fills it with ice water to sip during the game. One day her daughter took her mug and filled it for her. Halfway through Bingo, when the ice melted and the water was almost gone she noticed something in the bottom of the mug. It was the six miniature candy bars she had stored in the mug to hide from everybody else. When we stopped laughing, we all enjoyed the treat. When the Akwesasne Senior Games are on it...
