A group of concerned citizens gathered earlier this month for the first of several anti-Oxycontin abuse meetings. The group is bringing awareness to an epidemic that’s affecting communities across the continent. Oxycontin/Oxycodone and other prescription drugs are being sold on the black market or are being manufactured illegally and distributed quickly as the number of users addicted to the drug increases. Just this week, Akwesasne Mohawk Police began an investigation into suspicious activity and conducted a traffic stop. As a result, 195 p...
An Akwesasne couple has been arrested by St. Regis Mohawk Tribal Police and charged with several offenses related to an alleged scam involving their 4-year-old daughter. Frank Laughing Jr. and his wife Jennifer Jackson-Laughing were taken into custody on May 24. As the anniversary of June 1 approaches many community members are asking how the bridge and border crisis can remain unresolved a year later. Although the bridge has remained open since mid July of 2009 after being closed for six weeks (see sidebar on page 2), residents of Akwesasne have continued to file complaints of harassment and mistreatment by CBSA employees at the temporary port of entry in Cornwall and negotiations between CBSA and the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne have been almost...

Letter to the Editor: My name is Julie White, and on June 5, 2010 I am casting my vote for Randy Hart. I have known Randy my entire life, he is my uncle, and he does not win my vote on that qualification alone. My Uncle Randy is the type of person who is the first to show up when anyone needs help. I cannot think of a time when I asked a favor of him and he said no. I have watched him raise his children with a dedication to making them the best individuals they can be. I have never heard Randy speak ill of anyone. He may have disagreements and...
To the editor: Shekon Akwesasronon! During the summer and fall of 2008, I interviewed community members about their participation in health studies, their current health concerns, and gardens. The document is broken into six chapters: Chapters 1 and 2 introduce the Akwesasne Mohawk community, the history of the region, and the coming of...
Letter to the editor: She:kon Akwesasne, my name is Monica Montoya-LaFrance and I am asking you to support my husband, Ron LaFrance in his bid to become the next Chief of the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe. Ron and I have been happily married for the last 17 years and lived in Akwesasne raising our 4 children, Kanientatiesa, Kaniehtine, Ryanne and Ariyah. Our time together has been one of hope, joy and happiness as we have raised our children together with one simple teaching: You are from this community and it is your responsibility to make Akwesasne...
Letter to the editor: Randy Hart, a determined go getter. Randy Tehatsitsientens Hart had accelerated at a tremendous pace when he was one of my adult learners for the Kanienkehaka language. He has continuously displayed a desire to learn our language and was most serious of all students I have ever taught. Our classes in the beginning were held at the “log cabin” across from Randy’s home. Our study times were just enough so that no one was over whelmed at the amount of new material or language review given. It became evident that the four...

The Department of the Environment is concerned that we may lose 90% of the butternut trees to a disease call “Butternut Canker.” This disease was first discovered in 1967 in the Wisconsin area. At the time the scientists did not know that the dead Butternut trees was related to the disease. In 1993 it was discovered that the death of the butternut trees was linked to a fungus transported from tree to tree by insects. The fungi (Siroccocus) are elongated, sunken black blemishes that can form in...
Tap into the power of antioxidants to protect your skin No sunscreen—no matter how high the SPF—offers 100% protection from the sun’s burning UV rays, nor the damage it can do to skin’s DNA. So while cosmetic scientists continue to work to find ways to boost the protection quotient of sunscreen products against both UVB and UVA light, cancer researchers are focusing their efforts on the promise of natural protection, namely from antioxidants. Why? Antioxidants are being eyed for their ability to douse inflammation, oxidative stress, and DNA...
Rhubarb Muffins Rhubarb’s beautiful, rosy stalks poke up out of the ground in spring before any other fruit making them the quintessential “fruit” for this season. These little gems won’t last long after being baked! 2 cups sorghum flour or brown rice flour ½ cup tapioca flour 2 tablespoons arrowroot powder or potato starch 2 teaspoons baking powder 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon xanthan gum ½ teaspoon sea salt ¼ te...

Continued from last week... The Silver Covenant Chain, the emblem of the relationship between the Haudenosaunee and the Crown, contains many of the elements of the Kayanerekowa. Even in its beginnings, it was linked to peace: at a conference between New York, Maryland, Virginia and representatives of four of the five nations of the Confederacy in 1677, Garakondie stated on behalf of the Haudenosaunee (after acknowledging “that we have killed of ye Christiand & Indians formerly”, that we... do thank the gentleman there that they do exhort us...
