Yesterday, the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe held a press conference about their recent negotiations with Governor Cuomo. In basic terms, a Memorandum of Understanding was agreed upon in which the tribe will immediately pay New York State half of the monies it has owed since 2010, which is 30 million dollars. In return, the State guarantees that the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe will retain their zone of exclusivity, which includes Franklin, St. Lawrence, Clinton, Essex, Hamilton, Jefferson, Lewis and...
On Friday, nearly 500 people gathered to demonstrate their frustration with the border crossing and restrictions which interfere with travel for Akwesasronon. They gathered at 9AM at the Mohawk Nation Longhouse, where the crowed was told not to react to jeers and taunts by people as they arrived in Cornwall. The march began at the longhouse and proceeded over the American bridge, where people again gathered at the old customs building. After a few people spoke explaining what was going to...

As an original member of the Land Claims Committee for the Mohawk Nation I took a firm stance against the cession of our aboriginal lands to New York State regardless of what kind of offer then Governor Mario Cuomo tendered. I was committed to defending our treaties which committed us to act in union as Haudenosaunee, I did not believe we had any authority to sell the earth beneath our feet and I was compelled to protect the rights of those yet unborn unto the seventh generation. For those who felt as I did the thought of ceding our aboriginal...
She:kon: Mohawk women have a rich history of political involvement in Akwesasne. Their struggles to maintain tribal sovereignty, preserve their language and cultures, and manage the Mohawk lands and natural resources are unique to our status as Mohawk people. As tribal leaders, Mohawk women have continually challenged federal, state, and tribal authorities to formulate or reform policy for the benefit of Akwesasronon. Over the last two decades, an increasing number of women – including the likes of Alma Ransom, Barbara Lazore, Maggie T...
Readers, Too often we simply accept that Tribal governments (as opposed to our traditional governments) have elected representatives - presidents, chiefs, chairmen or CEO’s and so forth. They are entrusted with great powers and are expected to rule according to their thoughts, desires and beliefs. This is a dangerous thing. We rarely hear what is in their minds and hearts as they compete for electoral votes and vie for positions of government. Positions of great power. In Iroquoia amongst the Haudenosaunee we shun the gestures of the eager o...
Letter to the Editor March on the Bridge Watching the march on Friday was memorable. I am encouraged to see the support that was given on a work day. The march represented the assertion of our rights as a collective and the traditional council should be the government body in charge with dealing with the Canadian government. We have allowed the traditional government to be usurped by the arm of the Canadian government that is the band council. If we believe that we are dealing with the government on a nation to nation basis then it should be...
Letter to the Editor: I just wanted to clarify that the letter that was sent to the Indian Time Newspaper was NOT written by myself. It was actually written by a volunteer coach from the Milton Little League and I thought that this letter was far too good not to share with the surrounding community. Although, if I were to write a letter on this particular topic, it would not be that far off at all. I feel it should be something shared before each season no matter what youth sport it is. I know there are a lot of volunteer coaches who also...

As Little brother’s speech has become clearer his confidence has been on the rise. He has started to come out of his shell and ask for friends to come hang out. Before it was Big Brother’s buddies who would take him in under their wing. He has even begun to make plans with his buddies from Headstart. It is such a drastic change from the start of the school year when he was the one student playing alone while all the rest grouped together. He knew they couldn’t understand all his words so he didn’t want them to point it out. Three and a half ye...

By Connie Gerow, 4-H Tribal Mentoring Coordinator What type of cat can jump with a single bound to the top of a door case? What cat do you know that likes to play in a bathtub of water? If you answered not your ordinary cat, you would be right. Most domesticated cats like to jump onto counters and usually dislike water. On Tuesday, May 7th, the 4-H Mighty Shamrock After School Mentoring program welcomed a pair of Bengal Cats that are owned by Bonnie and Jenna Brockway of Malone. Bengal Cats are...

The Akwesasne Boys and Girls Club held their annual clean up day on Saturday and it was gorgeous outside. The clean up day is done every year but this year the ABGC received an ACTION grant from Alcoa, which stands for Alcoans Coming Together In Our Neighborhoods grant. The Alcoa Foundation, the non-profit arm of Alcoa, recognizes volunteer efforts with a $3,000 donation to a charity. First an Alcoa employee must champion an event, which means initiate it and get at least 10 other Alcoa...

Taking the stage on Wednesday were the Middle School band and chorus presenting an evening of excellent musical performances.
