Storytelling is practiced by all cultures around the world. To the Mohawks and other Iroquois Nations, the telling and reciting of stories is very important. They tell us about our past and prepare us for the future. Some stories are historical while others are for pure entertainment. Iroquois lesson stories teach children how to look at the world around them and answer their questions as to why things are the way they are. These tales usually have a moral to them. Such morals include: respecting your Elders, why cheating is wrong, some...

Springtime is such a glorious time of the year. Spring’s arrival brings with it such things as beautiful flowers, singing birds, and delicate butterflies for each of us to watch and enjoy. The first butterfly you see, however, may not be a butterfly. The small white flitting butterfly like one you see in early spring is not a butterfly at all. It is a White Cabbage moth. They are not, as one may think, a pest. They actually are more interested in the nectars they can find. Cabbage root mag...
This picture depicts an altar made for what was called Grand Procession on Corpus Christi Sunday. There were at least four alters made throughout the village of Saint Regis. The alters were made by the men and decorated by the women and girls. The procession stopped at each altar and the rosary was said. Usually the first Communion class marched along too. I remember some of it, Helen Cole reminded me of a few more details. As you can see from the pictures a lot of work was put into it. Thank...

I’m pretty sure when equal rights came into play, so did doing your fair share of work at home argument. Once upon a time women were in charge of households only. Women have taken on many new roles since those days and men, well, let’s just say I think they kept the same pace. Their day ends when work is over. But a mom’s, well she doesn’t stop. I was hanging out with some mom friends about a week ago. Just hearing a mom’s to do list makes you exhausted which is probably why most men tune it out. In one ear and out the other because if they a...
I have a hard time finding a place on the Marine Unit since other firefighters live closer to the station than I do. I usually get there to see the boat loaded and someone saying there’s enough firefighters on board. One night we get a call of a boat in distress in the north channel down towards Lake St. Francis. I immediately jumped in my truck and raced down to the station. Low and behold, I got a place on the boat! It was a rather nice night for late spring until I took another look at the sky. It had turned dark and nasty with the clouds b...
