  • Racetrack building burned

    Shannon Burns|May 20, 2010

Owners of Mohawk International Raceway as well as police are searching for an individual or individuals responsible for burning a building at the racetrack in Frogtown early Sunday morning, breaking into each concession booth and eventually stealing a racetrack vehicle. Cameras at a nearby business show an explosion taking place at around 4:30 a.m. at the track’s one-year-old administrative building that housed offices, the ticket counter as well as the bar. The building was a total loss and o...

Thank you to the community of Akwesasne for the fundraiser for my son, Brad Bonaparte. These events raised $7,003.00 through the barbecue chicken dinner, the blues bands in the evening, the raffle of all the items and the extra raffle of a doll. I want to especially thank all of Brad’s friends who sponsored these events and who worked so hard at all of them. It certainly took a lot of people who did the planning, preparing of the food and putting the dinners together. The response of the community who came through and bought the dinners and o...

    May 20, 2010

Thank you, We would like to thank all the wonderful people who helped us give Tawietsia the send off that he wanted and deserved; our family and friends who were there from day one to prepare for Tawietsia. The cooks at the Tsi Snaihne Recreation who prepared the great meal. The ladies, who prayed, sang in church and led the prayers for us throughout. Father Belgarde for the beautiful mass. For the men who were pallbearers. And to every one who sent flowers and brought food or were just there to help out with your support or your kind words....

  • Letter to the Editor

    May 20, 2010

May 15, 2010 Letter to the Editor: I nominated Randy Hart for chief of the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe because of a number of reasons. First, I like his attendance at the monthly tribal meetings. Every time I’m there he is there also, right in the front row. He has a lot of knowledge about what is going on and does not like the way a lot of issues are handled. Randy wants to have a system in place to make referendums permanent and not advisory. There should have been a referendum on the IGA purchase, but there wasn’t, yet when Burning Sky was for...

  • Letter to the Editor

    May 20, 2010

Letter to the editor, My name is Jason McDonald, I was one of the candidates for the tribal sub-chief position that the community will be voting on June 5th. I was nominated by my mother Edith McDonald and seconded by my Aunt Emily Lauzon. I accepted nomination and went through the requirements of getting the background check and the drug test. This is where I ran into a problem. It is of no one’s doing but my own and I’d like to share the situation. I failed the drug test due to marijuana use. My last usage of the drug was April 1st 2010. I w...

  • Letter to the Editor

    May 20, 2010

Dear Editor 5/17/2010 The recent events in the Gulf of Mexico demonstrates the vulnerability of the energy market, insofar as a simple remote shutoff at the base of these off shore drilling rigs, could have averted this major oil leak. As a result, thousands of off shore drilling rigs will probably have to be re-tooled to prevent this from happening again. I don’t have a PHD in economics I am just a simple lay person, a product of my time, but I do know one thing, this will only have a negative impact on the price of energy. I already see fluct...

  • Change is Where Its At this Coming Election

    May 20, 2010

Three candidates warrant serious consideration this election. After working very hard for two terms as sub-chief, a position that puts the sub-chief in close and frequent contact not only with the issues of our day but also in touch with the average Tribal member; assisting you with very personal issues and helping the Tribal member traverse the bureaucracy that is the Tribal government programs and services. For six years sub-Chief Ron LaFrance has worked hard for you, laid aside the priorities of his family to serve your family. Six years to...

  • Enabling

    May 20, 2010

What is enabling? You are enabling when you do something for your alcoholic/addict that they could and should do for themselves. When you help someone to avoid the consequences of their actions, you are denying them the opportunity to learn that their behavior is inappropriate. If you do something for someone who is unable to do it for them self, you are helping. If they could and should do it for them self, you are making them dependent on you. A really good example of enabling goes like this. My alcoholic /drug addict used to joke that her...

  • The latest buzz on coffee

  • Natural ways to combat head lice

    May 20, 2010

According to the Mayo Clinic, head lice is the second most common communicable disease (after the common cold) among school children. These tiny insects are parasites that live and feed on the blood from a human scalp. Because lice spread easily from person to person via close contact, contracting lice is in no way a sign of poor hygiene. Over-the-counter treatments and prescription medications will rid your child’s head of lice, but most contain potentially toxic pesticides—their goal is to kill bugs, after all. Instead, try a natural, hom...

  • The Covenant Chain

    May 20, 2010

The sailing ship that was the symbol of the British in the Two Row Wampum is also an essential element of the Silver Covenant Chain. It is that ship which was being tied to the Confederacy, first by a rope held in people’s hands, then to a tree, then to a rock, and finally by a chain linked to the heartland of the Confederacy at Onondaga. It is sometimes said that the three rows of wampum which separate the sailing ship and the canoe on the Two Row Wampum are the three links of the Covenant Chain: Peace, Respect and Trust. These three keep the...
