  • In Memory

    May 19, 2011

This week it will be five years since my father Lincoln White passed away at the age of 89 on May 16, 2006. I sorted through family photographs we have (most taken by my dad) and choose this one because it captures his personality so perfectly—he always had a smile, was always so personable and outgoing. He was a “people person”. Dad was always engaging people in discussion—whether it was at the morning coffee shop, the post office, at his dialysis treatment, a hockey game, sitting on his por...

    Doug George Kanentiio|May 19, 2011

Two of the most creative Mohawk artists of our generation have now passed into the spirit world but not before leaving a powerful legacy of their life’s work. Peter Blue Cloud Willams-Aroniawenrate and Salli Benedict-Kawennotakie were exceptionally creative and gifted individuals whose writings and communal work deeply affected their generation and brought honour to the Mohawk Nation. Both exercised their skills in many mediums but it was through their poetry that they were able to express the e...

  • Letter to the editor

    May 19, 2011

Letter to the Editor: It was Thomas Jefferson who once said that information is the currency for democracy. As a parent and resident in the Salmon River Central School District, this statement rings especially true with me. How dare a publicly run school district like Salmon River Central dodge the truth about our school closings due to Asbestos? In a democratic society, we are entitled to the truth from government officials like our Superintendent. We are the parents and residents who own this school district. It belongs to us and it serves...

  • Al-Anon Step One - We admitted we were powerless over alcohol - that our lives had become unmanageable

    May 19, 2011

Many of us come to Al-Anon filled with despair and hopelessness. Some of us come to find out how to get another person sober; others grew up in alcoholic homes or left alcoholic partners and no longer live with active drinking. We may not see the impact of having lived with alcoholism until we begin to acknowledge that there are familiar difficulties in our present lives and relationships. Many of us would not have voluntarily walked through the doors of Al-Anon if we were not in some sort of crisis or pain that forced us to seek help. Though...

  • Environment

    May 19, 2011

With the warm weather arriving we should be considering putting in a compost. I have included two articles from Richard Gast, who is from the Malone Cornell Cooperative Extension. One article is how to build your own composter with a garbage can and cover. The other article is about composting and what ingredients to put into it, how to “bake” it and mixing it up. Both are excellent articles and show you step by step how to do this. Composting is an easy way to save some money by composting it yourself and save on reducing your garbage out...
