  • Spring Flowers

    Barbara Gray|May 15, 2008

Spring is such a wonderful time. There are flowers just about everywhere. I took a morning walk on Mother’s Day with my Mom in a local moist wooded area, and what we saw was beyond words to describe. The flowers were absolutely breathtakingly beautiful, as are all of the flowers coming up around many of the homes here in Akwesasne. Watching plants has a long tradition in world history. In 1750, a Swedish scientist and artist Linnaeus began the system of plant phenology. Plants were assigned b...

  • Book: Wake

    Delia McDonald|May 15, 2008

This book, though odd in how it’s written, is actually really interesting and fun to read. Lisa McMann creates a compelling novel about a girl with an odd gift. Janie has never been normal. She has a certain…ability to see things. More specifically, peoples dreams. Whether she’s awake or asleep, Janie is drawn into dreams that are not her own, in fact she rarely has one of her own dreams. One particular nightmare was completely terrifying. Janie is afraid to be drawn into this dream again, knowing the terror that waits, that she should have...

  • Giving Orders

    An Anonymous Mother|May 15, 2008

As Baby T grows and shows me how much cleverer he has become I sometimes cannot help but think of how simple it used to be. Before he was walking, and jumping off things, and had begun to talk so well he could make a point and leave me speechless. Back when he was a quiet, content, and shy baby. He’s still content but he is no longer shy or quiet oh no. He has come out of his shell I guess and voices his little opinions to anyone within shouting range. He went from clinging on to my leg for dear life at parties to taking off in a full on sprint...

  • Tales From the Station

    Adrian McDonald|May 15, 2008

The HAVFD didn’t start out in the same manner it’s operating currently. In fact, we used to be called “Cellar Savers” due to the large amount of fires that resulted in smoking basements. Well one day Dad ended up driving the engine to a fire on State Road that involved an outbuilding built on a wooden foundation. When it was finally out the chief radioed him to find out how things were going. Dad responded “We lost it, even the basement burnt.” Well, Dad had to stand tall before the man when he got back to the station. Apparently our reputat...
