At the Akwesasne Mohawk School on Kawehno:ke a teacher led committee made up of Cheryl Bruyere, Denise Jackson and Denise Clute set up the activities for the week. “We planned for our school and brought in community people all week long,” said Mrs. Bruyere. Day one included a presentation by Bob Stevenson on trapping, with local artisans and craftspeo...
Families in Akwesasne were treated to a free fun day at Generations Field this past Saturday courtesy of the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribes’ Department of Social Services. Bouncy houses, lawn games, face painting by Buttons the clown, access to the playground and enough free food to feed the territory were offered to the community of Akwesasne. This event was originally slated to occur in April as part of the “Child Abuse Awareness Month” initiative, but the weather had other plans in mind. Postp...
The U.S. Court of Appeals for the 2nd Circuit unanimously agreed to lift the stays on the implementation for taxing on-reservation cigarette sales to non-member purchasers this past Monday. In a statement released by Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, “The decision closes an enormous tax-evasion loophole that was depriving New York of hundreds of millions of dollars in tax revenue.” Native leadership has another take on the courts decision. “While today’s decision by the U.S. Court of Appeals is disappointing, we will continue fightin...

Dear Community of Akwesasne, As you know, the Elected Tribal Council will not give a reason as to why they won’t sign the amended Ethics Ordinance. They continue to use smoke and mirrors to fool the community into believing that it can work if rules and regulations were put into place. Yet, they stated at the April Tribal meeting that they knew it didn’t work when they put it to referendum? It makes me wonder what else they put out there for us to vote on that we have trusted them on. They have all stated that they believe that we should hav...
An update from SLU; She:kon Akwesasronon, My name is Okiokwinon Chelsea Francis, I am currently a Junior at St. Lawrence University in Canton, New York where I am a Government Major and Native American Studies Minor. I am writing to you because of some issues that caught my attention, along with the attention of the entire campus, and to inform you all about these events that have taken place this past semester just 45 minutes from home. In February of this year, a sorority on my campus held a Cowboys and Indian themed party, which was not met...
Calling Upon The “Editor-In-Chief” Submitted By: Tim Johnson Included in the millions of people throughout the United States and around the world who welcomed the demise of Osama Bin Laden were American Indians. Not since Adolph Hitler has there been such a universally despised figure, so replete with immoral sentience. Death was the only fitting end to a man who had dispensed death on a massive and virtually indiscriminate scale. He was a man without a country and his killing reflected the same. His victims included citizens of numerous nat...

The truck was donated in the spring of 2010 to the HAVFD and SRMT through Indian Health Services Operation TransAm, a program that donates surplus government equipment to Indian Tribes. The truck was originally ordered by the US Navy and was placed at O’Hare Airport with it most recently being assigned to a VA hospital near White R...
One of the things that I’ve learned in AI-Anon is that I’m not responsible for someone else’s drinking. The slogan that captures this is “I didn’t cause it, I can’t control it, and I can’t cure it”. A lot of people come into the program trying to find a way to stop their alcoholic from drinking. Look at the writings of Lois Wilson and all that she tried to do for Bill W. She tried everything including getting drunk herself to show him what the terrible effects of alcohol were. There are a lot of people who come to AI-Anon to find that answe...
A woman steps off a scale, smiling. This isn’t a diet commercial. It’s a scene from the Centering room at St. Regis Mohawk Health Services, where a group of mothers-to-be have gathered for their latest session of prenatal care. They compare growing bellies while taking their own blood pressure with digital cuffs. The women chat and laugh as one of them visits privately with the doctor behind a folding screen. Suddenly, the distinct echo of a rapid heartbeat fills the room. The chatter stops for...
On March 31, 2011 Deyohaha:ge, the Indigenous Knowledge Center in Ohsweken (Six Nations) sponsored a number of presentations at the Haudenosaunee seed exchange. The first presenter was Renée Thomas Hill, an elder from the Turtle Clan of the Mohawk Nation, Upper Cayuga Longhouse, Six Nations of the Grand River Territory. Because of the eloquence and beauty of her presentation, we have decided to share a summary of her talk. It is important that we grow our seeds with love because our seeds are...
• Last week everyone awoke to the news that Osama bin Laden had been killed by US Navy Seals in a covert operation called “Operation Geronimo.” The operation name has caused ripples across Indian country. As we know, Geronimo was a strong fighter against the oppression of the USA. He did not kill women, children – he fought for the rights of his people. To call the Osama bin Laden operation Geronimo is offensive to the original people of the United States. Please read the Haudenosaunee press statement from the Onondaga leadership. • Congratulat...

In the beginning, the World was not as we know it. It was a water world inhabited only by Animals and Creatures of the air who could survive without land. The Sky World was quite different. Human-Type Beings lived there with infinite types of Plants and Animals to enjoy. In the Sky World, there was a Tree of Life that was very special to the People of the Sky World. They knew that it grew at the entrance to the world below and forbade anyone to tamper with the Tree. One woman who was soon to give birth was curious about what was beneath the...

Here are some tips that may help you get that bargain! Show up early to save: The sign says 8am or 9am, and then be there at that time- early birds get the best buys at a good price. Be sure to...
