  • Oklahoma Gov Vetos Bill Permitting Tribal Regalia

    May 11, 2023

Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt has rejected a bill that would have permitted Native students to don tribal regalia at graduation ceremonies. SB 429 aimed to prevent schools from prohibiting students from donning their cultural regalia during graduation events and other school activities. Schools should have the authority to determine their own codes for dress according to Stitt’s message following the veto. “In other words, if schools want to allow their students to wear tribal regalia at graduation, good on them; but if schools prefer for the...

  • Basic Call to Consciousness

    May 11, 2023

Akwesasne Notes The Haudenosaunee, more commonly known as the Iroquois Confederacy, are an ancient people of North America. Our tradition states that our people originate in the northeastern woodlands of North America. There are no stories within that tradition concerning migration across frozen lands to the area we occupy. We have been and continue to be the original inhabitants of these lands. Our existence in these lands has not been one of absolute peace and tranquility. We have had to develop the civilization we enjoy. There was a time...

  • Eye Candy, Cough Syrup, and Early Flowers

    May 11, 2023

After many months (five-plus where I live) of winter whiteness, it’s a relief to watch the snow melt at last. We’re always grateful, even though the loss of snow cover gives way to a mostly brown world: brown grass, sand everywhere – even brown pine needles along the roads. Not to mention the leaves, trash, or dog poop that was mercifully hidden under the snow. Those few sepia-toned weeks after the white stuff disappears and before trees and grass wake up can be visually bleak. That’s probably why I’m always so happy to see bright yellow co...

  • Entertainment Binge

    May 11, 2023

By Isaac White. Let me start by saying that I am cognizant of regularity in telling you my process for writing these weekly mind to print conversations for public consumption. Even I’m starting to think that I’m oversharing, but yet again we find ourselves in the same position. This won’t take long however, and it’s somehow cathartic for me to get it out. After all that lead up, I guess it should be something truly revelatory but it’s not. I just had a hard time finding something to write about. I’m still in the mode of watching single epis...

  • Grow Easy-Care Mandevillas for Season-Long Color

    May 11, 2023

by Melinda Myers Bold color, tropical beauty, and easy-care mandevillas make excellent additions to patios, decks, and gardens. Train them onto a trellis, allow them to cascade from a hanging basket, or combine them with other plants. Enjoy summer-long blossoms and the butterflies, hummingbirds, and other pollinators that stop by for a visit. Once divided into two different groups, dipladenias and mandevillas, the botanists now consider them all mandevillas. You will find both names still in...

  • Hiking in the Adirondack Mountain Reserve

    May 11, 2023

Akwesasne has a large contingent of hikers – from young children to active elders, they all take off to the mountain for a short hike or a long grueling trek. Hiking the Adirondacks is free, following some basic essential rules and you’re all set. Going further into the Adirondack mountain range this year, you’ll have to be a bit more prepared than just wearing the proper clothing, staying on the trail, and taking out what you bring in. While most trailheads in the Adirondack Park are first come, first served, a handful require extra steps...

  • Berkley Professor Finally Admits To Being Pretendian

    May 11, 2023

By Isaac White. An associate professor at the University of California Berkeley has apologized following confirmation that her claims of Native American ancestry are bogus. Elizabeth Hoover, who has professional ties to Akwesasne, and who formerly claimed ancestral ties to Kahnawake, said that she in fact has been white her “whole life.” Hoover’s LinkedIN profile shows an extensive background in Native American fields of study, including Native American food systems, food sovereignty, environmental health, and advocacy among many others, all a...

    May 11, 2023

This significant decision comes after a period of stringent travel restrictions between the two countries, marking a critical milestone in the global effort to overcome the pandemic. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the U.S.-Canada border was closed to non-essential travel in March 2020. This unprecedented move aimed to curb the spread of the virus and protect citizens on both...
