I have been in Akwesasne for thirty-one (31) years, I have been working through the Mohawk Council Environment Department for twenty-six (26) years, and mos...

Reprinted from Wampum Belts of the Iroquois by Tehanetorens This belt is sometimes called the Seven Nations Belt. It is a record belt, that is, it records a happening. It means this: Their path is not straight. They have forsaken the Great Law and gone to the land of the cross, Canada. This belt represents the union of the Seven Nations, and the crooked line at the bottom represents that they were crooked (Roman Catholic). This particular belt embodies the pledge of the seven Canadian Christiani...

Just because most newborns don’t have teeth yet, it’s never too early for new parents to start a dental regimen for their baby. “Parents shouldn’t wait until teething starts to think about their baby’s dental health,” says Dr. Jamie Reynolds, an orthodontist, national and international lecturer and author of “World Class Smiles Made in Detroit” (www.AskDrReynolds.com). Reynolds says it is important for parents to give children a proper start if they are to enjoy a lifetime of good dental health. He offers these milestones for parents to keep...
One of the most anticipated movies of the year has finally arrived and after seeing it, I can safely say that it is a good movie but emotionally draining. Without giving too much away, the movie is an ambitious crossover that was 10 years in the making by having over 20 characters in the film. One would think that this movie would be considered a mess with so many characters and only so much time to dedicate to each group. Yet the movie manages to balance them all by giving each group a chance to shine for the right amount of time, right...
Two Mohawk brothers were harassed by police and pulled from a college tour at Colorado State University after their presence made a parent “nervous,” according to stories that have been making international headlines. Thomas Kanewakeron Gray, 19, and his brother, Lloyd Skanahwati Gray, 17, originally from Akwesasne, had saved money and traveled seven hours from their home in Santa Cruz, N.M. to the school in Fort Collins, Colo. Upon arriving in the new city they became lost, but found their way to CSU thirty minutes late for the scheduled tou...
The Massena school district is starting a mentoring program for male Native American students through a federal program called “My Brother’s Keeper.” Stephanie Allen, the district’s curriculum director, told the Board of Education on May 3 that the Obama-era program is designed “to eliminate opportunity gaps and achievement gaps we’re seeing with male students of color.” “At Massena, that would be our Native students,” she said, but added that the Trump administration is no longer funding it. “So we don’t have as long as we would like.” The p...
Credit goes to the Mohawk leadership for trying to find a way to relieve the extraordinarily high utility rates paid by homes throughout Akwesasne. Those costs take a major bite out of the budgets for the families, a situation which is galling whenever one drives across the International Bridges, looks to the west and sees the St. Lawrence Power Dam, the largest source of hydro electrical power in the region-and knowing that both the land and the water used by that facility are a part of our resources, never ceded, never sold. The amount of...
Submitted by Paul Hetzler, Horticulture and Natural Resources Educator, Cornell Cooperative Extension of St. Lawrence County At 42% protein, they’re highly nutritious, and across the globe are an important food source, if not a delicacy. In southern Quebec and Ontario we produce them in droves: grubs. The larval life-stages of beetles such as European Chafers and Japanese, Asiatic garden, and Oriental beetles, grubs injure lawns by eating grass roots. It severe cases, turf can be peeled back like a carpet. Damage can be compounded by skunks, m...
