The Province of Ontario assesses student achievement in reading, writing, and mathematics annually at the end of Grade 3 and Grade 6. The intent of the assessments is to provide teachers, school administrators, parents, and students with data and information to better improve teaching and learning, and to prepare students for the next grade level. The Ahkwesahsne Mohawk Board of Education began administering the EQAO assessments in May of 2007 as part of the Board-wide School Improvement Plan. This year’s test will be held the week of Onerah...
A sign in front of Larry and Dana Leigh Thompson’s home on Route 37 calls for tribal members to boycott the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe’s upcoming election and to instead participate in a “community election.” The Thompsons and Melvin White, among others, are asking the community to elect a new council and to create a new government....
When Baby T was at the age where he could walk but not yet talk clearly, he was surprisingly sensitive. Not a “wah I’m a brat” sensitive (yes, he’s spoiled) but caring of others. Even if they were in fact strangers. I could understand what he would say because he’s my child but I would have to explain what he said to anyone else. Baby T is that kid who sees a baby crying and makes it his problem. First by asking me why is that baby crying? Then going right over there and patting the baby’s foot if the baby is up high being held by a parent. O...
We got a call one night to respond to a boat on fire. It was one of those rare occasions that I got to drive a truck. Usually, I’m one of the farthest members from the station so before I get there the trucks are out of the station and moving. This time I don’t know how I did it but I was driving the truck headed to a small side road by the river. One of the members met me at the road and guided me down a cow path to the river. I looked at it and had doubts I would drive a tractor down there much less this huge honking fire truck. I took it...

I love all birds, but I have to say the Winter Wren (Troglodytes troglodytes) is at the top of my favorites list. It is the smallest wren in North America. It measures 3.25 inches from the tip of its thin, pointed bill to the tip of its tail., and has a 5 to 6 inch wingspan. There is a dull band over its eye, but it is a light brown and does not stand out like a white band would. The rest of its body goes from gray-brown to browns with black bars on its wings, back, and tail. The sexes l...
Best friends Margaret Lazore (Ransom) & Julia Seymour (Curleyhead) Thank you to Jeni Cook for sharing this photo with our readers....
If you should desire it, this book is about facing your fears and overcoming your obstacles. Colleen Coble shows you how even when fear and dread overcome you. I’d recommend this book to adults who love a good love story with a little suspense and drama. Haley has never been able to cope with the loss of her sister, she blames herself for her death and she believes that her parents did to. Tank Lessiter has just started to get over his wife’s death. He and his sister Libby are raising his daughter all by themselves since his wife Leigh...
A group of students from Kana:takon School welcomed the challenge posed to the 7th and 8th graders each year: To run for the Ahkwesahsne Mohawk School on Cornwall Island to Ramada Inn, in Cornwall. The run includes making it across the Seaway Bridge. The event raises awareness for athletes with physical disabilities. Known as the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics, the run is organized regionally by the Ontario Provincial Police and locally by the Akwesasne Mohawk Police. Akwesasne...

My mother taught me RELIGION. “You better pray that will come out of the carpet.” 3. My mother taught me about TIME TRAVEL. “If you don’t straighten up, I’m going to knock you into the middle of next week!” 4. My mother taught me LOGIC. “Because I said so, that’s why.” 5. My mother taught me MORE LOGIC. “If you fall out of that swing and break your neck, you’re not going to the store with me.” 6. My mothe...
The 2008 Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will take place at the Salmon River High School Auditorium on Saturday June 7th, 2008. This year was another year of making difficult choices in the selections from the pool of nominations. The committee for the Hall of Fame consists of 13 members and after many discussions, the class of 2008 was chosen. When nominations are sent in, the application includes as much sports history as possible during the individual’s high school career along with an...
Mohawk International Raceway, formerly Frogtown International Speedway, kicked off a new era of racing this past Saturday night and the fans were treated to a great program of racing all sponsored by LaVigne’s Auto Sales of Massena. In the Coors Light DIRTcar 358 Modifieds, it was the 1st running of the Mohawk 30 that proved to be an exciting race right down to the very end. Mitchell Jock and Carey Terrance started on the front row by virtue of their wins in their qualifying events with Terrance grabbing the early lead followed by Jock, Kyl...
Massena - Niawen Kowa say the athletes of the Massena Central Boys Varsity Lacrosse team for their new team jerseys. Early in the ‘08 lacrosse season the team was informed they would be wearing the old modified jerseys for the season. After the first scrimmage, they realized that wearing the old jerseys was not going to work out because they were too short and too tight for the majority of the players. What to do? They came up with the idea of fundraising to buy new jerseys. Team Cap...

The day for the championship finally came. On Saturday morning at 8 a.m., the Ontario South ladies got up to do their stretches and eat breakfast. It was a very quiet day it seemed, probably on account of the game the previous night against British Columbia in the semi-finals. That game was the most exciting game all week. The Ontario South ladies were tied at 3 against BC with just 44 seconds left in the final period. BC wanted the victory so badly. The crowd was going wild with intense e...
I have been an avid reader and subscriber to Indian Time for over two years. In the time that I have been reading I have noticed that there are many high level athletes in many different sports in the Akwesasne area. I have read about Akwesasne residents who excel and/or participate in a vast array of sports and sporting endeavors. From full contact sports such as lacrosse, hockey and football to the more skilled sports like volleyball, baseball and softball. The reason for writing this column is to spread the word on proper training for the...
