On a recent trip to the southwest I had the opportunity to listen to the concerns of Native people in that region. They, like the Haudenosaunee, are worried about the loss of their indigenous languages, the intrusion of the media on the youth, widespread substances abuses, the overall decline in health for all age groups and the excesses of Indian governments across the continent. Most worrisome for many was the removal of Natives from tribal roles for what many claimed were personal vendettas. They also believed it was an increasingly...
May 2, 2008 Letter to the Editor, I went to the meeting that was scheduled by Melvin White and Larry Thompson, this past Thursday May 1, 2008 and was pleasantly amazed at all the information that was presented and documentation that further backed the information. I realized how we as community members are being manipulated by our leaders who wish to stay in power and are attempting to maintain that comfort zone for self interest at the expense of all who live here. The truth of the matter is the 3 Chief Government was dissolved back in July...

Dear Editor, She:kon. I wanted to take a moment to acknowledge the recent comments of an Indian Time reader who commented with her Letter to the Editor, Ms. Agnes Terrance. Thank you for voicing your opinion and for reading my Letter to the Editor on the topic of outside investment in Akwesasne. I was only raising the topic of investment in Akwesasne Mohawk Territory from non-community members, and I do not advocate the issue in one direction or another. What I am highlighting is that the desire for non-community members to invest in Akwesasne...
We write this letter in an attempt to educate the community members about one business organization within Akwesasne. We will use this real event as an example for using Sovereignty in a manner that is wrong and demeaning to our own native community. Please understand that this is not an attempt of retaliation by disgruntled employees, it is merely a message for everyone to realize how Sovereignty is wrongly used for one’s own gain through economics and poor management practices that will continue to affect our community when not corrected. O...

When the snow melts, the carelessness of polluters is revealed, and bottles, fast food bags and other unsightly trash covers the ditches and roadsides. The ATFE has been sponsoring an annual cleanup event for several years,...
