On Saturday, several people gathered to see Lisa Tiger speak. Tiger is an AIDS educator based in Santa Fe, New Mexico. In addition to the speaker, an original work of art was being created on stage as she spoke. Tiger detailed how she came to be infected, how she learned she was infected, going from HIV to AIDS, her life up to now, and her experiences with medication, relationships and marriage, child birth, and the murder of her daughter. Tiger’s tale begins as a warning about the woes of alcoh...
Branching Out With Books, a program at St. Regis Mohawk School, may be wrapping up this week, but it was able to do something extraordinary-publish a book of students writing and illustrations. Students from St. Lawrence University’s Environmental Perceptions and Indigenous Knowledge course “wanted to encourage more reading and writing in a fun way,” said Kelsey Colpitts, one of the students working with the kids. In order to do this, the SLU students had the kids each create a page in the b...

At the October and November 2012 monthly tribal meetings, the inaction by tribal chiefs on the non-native residency issue was brought up. Apparently, a 1986 tribal referendum resulted in a minimum 50% blood quantum rule for residency on the U.S. side of the reservation. Five years later tribal chiefs unilaterally decided to amend this rule to a minimum of 25% blood quantum for residency. After this, subsequent tribal chiefs quietly stopped enforcing any minimum blood quantum for residency. This has resulted in the number of resident...
To Indian Time: I would like to thank all the people who saved me from myself. November 2012 marks my one-year anniversary of being clean of Oxy’s, and if it weren’t for my family and those special people coming into my life to save me while I was on the path of self-destruction, I know I would not be here today. To my parents and sisters for sticking by my side through my whole ordeal of home detoxification, I am forever thankful. To the women who came to my parents’ rescue when your help was so needed a great big thank you. To Dr. Young...

On Saturday, the monthly General Meeting was held in the lobby at the St. Regis Mohawk Tribal building. Present were Tribal Chiefs LaFrance, Hart, and Thompson; as well Sub-chiefs Jacobs, Thompson, and Conners. The meeting began with a reading of the agenda, and from there it seemed Justin Tarbell was providing a litany of reasons why they were unable, or have been unwilling, to provide fuel discounts to tribal members. To the subject of fuel discounts for Tribal Members, community members had several suggestions as to ways to implement this,...
By Beverly Cook Reprinted w/ permission from Indian Country Today Our determination to survive as distinct Indigenous peoples comes from the will of our ancestors. They suffered unspeakable crimes to their spirits and bodies, and we still struggle to beat back this legacy of genocide. To outsiders, it might appear as if the Indian wars are over. We know that is not true. Our battle today is with historical oppression and generational trauma. Seeds of doubt and shame planted hundreds of years ago continue to take root in the darkness of each...
