Trailing by three goals midway through the fourth quarter, the Moccasins’ scored twice in the final four minutes, but it wasn’t enough, as Catawba held on for a 7-6 win to capture its second straight Deep South Conference championship Sunday afternoon at Mars Hill, N.C. Florida Southern finished the season 10-6. FSC’s Chris Murphy cut the deficit to 2-1 after the first quarter. Two minutes into the second quarter the Indians’ Freddie Turcio netted a goal. The Mocs responded, as Kevin Naslonski found Dane Sorensen in front of the cage for the...
You may have been channel surfing one night and come across a show called “Ice Road Truckers” or IRT. Well Akwesasne has its very own ice road trucker. Harvey Arquette has been around wheels most of his life, from the Canadian Tire Nascar Series to twenty-six years in the trucking business, but this winter he took his wheels from the pavement to the ice. Harvey has been hauling loads on the Tibbitt to Contwoyto Winter Road: a 600 km long, about 100 ft wide road that is 87 percent ice and bor...
All of this beautiful record temperature breaking weather does have its disadvantages. Because it is so dry, Akwesasne is experiencing an abundance of wildfires. Although spring is usually the busiest wildfire season, the Hogansburg-Akwesasne Volunteer Fire Department has handled 18 incidents between March 31 and April 8. They usually handle between 30 to 60 wildland fire calls a year. Many of the fires are set intentionally and rarely are the offenders punished. This year because of the dryness, what would usually only be a small grass fire...
In August of 2011, 57-year-old Kanietekeron Larry Thompson took a stand for his family and the community when he literally exposed the capped toxic landfill left by General Motors in the Raquette Point area. He was charged with criminal mischief, resisting arrest, and reckless endangerment. This week a St. Lawrence county judge dismissed the charges of resisting arrest and reckless endangerment. He still faces the charge of criminal mischief. He believes the toxins cause various diseases that...

Niawen:kowa, I would like to thank my family, friends and members of the community who supported me after the loss of my son, Jacob Light. I want to thank the Bombay Rescue, Akwesasne Mohawk Ambulance Service, St. Regis Mohawk Tribal Police, and the other rescue persons at the scene. The Dash I read of a man who stood to speak at the funeral of a friend He referred to the dates on her tombstone from the beginning to the end. He noted that first came the date of her birth and spoke of the following date with tears, But he said what mattered most of all was the dash between those years. For that dash represents all the time that she spent alive on earth... And now only those who loved her know what that little line is worth. For it matters not, how much we own; the cars, the h...

Some people may have thought what Kanietekeron did was extravagant. You could say he took the saying “actions speak louder than words” to heart. But allegedly driving a backhoe through a fence to dig up a shallow grave of toxic waste was an action that will most likely produce the desired effect-publicity. In fact, one of the most effective ways to stop corporate crimes is the use of publicity. If there is one thing as important as profits to a corporation it is their public image. Of course this is because public image correlates with pro...
Recently NBC’s “Rock Center” featured a story about the iron workers who are building closer to the top of the One World Trade Center. Marvin Davis and his son are currently working at the site where Davis is a general foreman. In an interview with NBC Davis expressed his sentiment about the job saying, “It’s a part of history. It’s a part of rebuilding you know, part of putting lives back together to show people that the spirit won’t be broken.” NBC noted the generations of Mohawk Indians...

To the Editor, I read with interest the essay MCA Grand Chief Mike Kanentakeron Mitchell wrote about the life of Kateri Tekakwitha in the April 12 issue of Indian Time. In 2009 I published A Lily Among Thorns: The Mohawk Repatriation of Kateri Tekakwitha, the result of almost decades of historical research. Like Kanentakeron, I challenged certain statements and attitudes of her early Jesuit biographers, especially those that demonized her traditional kin and countrymen. This is not to say, however, that I reject the overall veracity and...

Akwesasne Territory – Veteran Affairs Coordinator Jeff C. Whelan is trying to find out how accurate his list is of Mohawk Code talkers. “I’ve been working on this list for a while and I’m now at the point where I need some input from the community,” said Whelan. He is looking for verification, either documents or verbal confirmation or both. “What I need is clear and convincing evidence that this list of men were in fact Code Talkers during World War II,” he added. The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal Council recently requested the United States...
Do you think Wes Studi would make a good Tonto? He made a good Apache. Hell, as Magua he made a good Huron/Mohawk, I never was clear what tribe he was supposed to be from, but he sure was bad a** and ugly. Even while he and Russell Means were busy killing other Indians he charged our imaginations about ourselves. Was that the right message? Not one peep from the Indian movie image police. Indianicide? Indianicide wants me, lord I can’t go back there. Well, anyway. I read a blog earlier and the owner of the blog said she was pissed that J...
