On Saturday, the Akwesasne Mini Mart held its grand opening celebration. They gave away t-shirts, a mini lunch of hot dogs and chips and CKON was broadcasting live on location. Over the weekend, the Quilt of Belonging was on display at NavCan in Cornwall. The quilt, which was a giant undertaking, was the product of a huge volunteer effort. The quilt represents all 263 nations represented within Canada and spans 120 feet. On Saturday, the Akwesasne Task Force on the Environment held their annual seed and tree give away at the Generations Park pavilion. The event, which ran until around 1pm, gave out garden seeds and trees for the community. Community members could come down and sign up and once they had done this, pick out what they needed for gardening or trees for their yard. On Monday night, at the Best Western in Cornwall, there was a benefit dinner held to raise money for the Children’s Treatment Center. The center, which serves people from Akwesasne, Cornwall and the SD & G area, is a completely donation driven treatment center which is dedicated to the prevention and treatment of child abuse in the area.
