At the crack of dawn on March 23rd, five members of the Northern SKY Warriors team started their run to Ottawa to meet the Nishiyuu. They didn’t do it for publicity or recognition; they did it to answer the call that someone from Akwesasne be there in Ottawa when the walkers arrived. In fact, as Kiohontathe Alan Chubb put it, it was suggested lightly, and then it “became a serious idea,” and then they just did it. They left from the Longhouse and ran to Twin Leaf. They then took highway 2 to Mor...

To the People of Akwesasne, I, Sarahlee Skidders have this incredible opportunity to attend the Stem Cell Institute in Panama City, Panama from June 3, 2013 through June 28, 2013. They will be providing me the treatment I need to hopefully walk once again. The type of stem cell found in the tissue of umbilical cords (mesenchyme stem cell, MSC) can help to repair damaged and severed spinal cords. However, this treatment involves a lengthy process and is very expensive. So I would like to personally thank everyone who has helped out, attended,...
TERRITORY OF AKWESASNE – The results of a cross-border smuggling study conducted and released by the MacDonald Laurier Institute this week is misleading and unfortunately can not be considered objective or accurate due to its lack of fair and thorough research. The Border Integrity, Illicit Tobacco, and Canada’s Security 40-page study takes a broad look at the issue of smuggling in the “401 corridor” region (Montreal, Quebec to Kingston, Ontario). “While components of this study are accurate, the overall position seems to be pushing an agenda...

Dear Monica, Do you have any fun ideas for a few April Fool’s Jokes I can send to my online friends? Nia:wen, Akwesasne Foolist Dear Akwesasne Foolist, April Fool’s Day is one of my favorite holidays. Of course a Google search will provide you with awesome joke ideas. This year, YouTube tricked naive online users that it was actually just a temporary contest website and no more videos were going to be allowed after midnight. I actually had one online friend that contacted me about it to remind me that I should make sure I have a copy of all...
On Saturday at Building 34 on McCumber Road in Kawehnoke, a community meeting was held to discuss plans to purchase the Iroquois Water plant and build it into a metal fabrication plant. Nelson David White and Laura Morris have been working for the last eight months, at their own expense, to develop a plan that will bring jobs to Kawehnoke. The idea is that they wish to purchase the factory, after receiving a plan from the current owners, which would give them the building as well as the 10...
We’ve all heard of Murphy’s Law and I even once wrote about how it directly affects moms. Well I’m just going to go and name things I think fall under Mom law; things that happen, or seem to happen, to mostly us moms. My favorite is when you get a baby ready in a snowsuit and are walking to the car when they poop up to their necks. Last week I took some time off from work to have a break and get some projects done. Well, I ended up with barely enough time to take a shower. Little Brother became sick with this crazy weather. It’s spring! It’s wi...

Article submitted by Pascale Delormier On April 2, 2013 World Autism Awareness Day marked its sixth anniversary this year, a campaign that brings attention to the disability that affects many children. What’s important on this day is getting the message out about the community’s understanding and acceptance. In Akwesasne we celebrated this event at the BMO, the sponsor of this event, along with Autism Ontario. As many of you know from this week’s headlines, a new United States government healt...

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) issued guidance on preventing conflicts with coyotes and nuisance bear encounters. Guidance about the bear population can be found on the DEC website. With the onset of warmer weather, coyotes are setting up denning areas for soon-to-arrive pups. Conflicts with people and pets may result as coyotes become territorial around den sites and increase the frequency and intensity of foraging to provide food for their young. COYOTES People and coyotes can usually coexist if the coyotes...
