"Early in the spring, when the snow is still on the ground and the sun is struggling to shine, people from Akwesasne gather and a speaker is selected to burn tobacco to give thanks for all life. At this time of year, words are spoken and directed to the leader of trees, the Maple tree. As the warmer weather awakens all living plants and the sap begins to run, it is proof the maple tree continues to perform the instructions in which the trees were given. Besides providing us with shade, fruits...

As spring approaches, the ground begins to thaw due to the warming temperatures causing soil and landscaping to become unpredictable and delicate. Off-road vehicles such as ATVs and dirt bikes are heavy and can cause damage to the lawn area. The St. Regis Recreation is urging the community not to operate any vehicles in the field as it may cause ruts in the landscaping, which could result in costly repairs. Please be reminded that off-road vehicles are also prohibited from the grounds of our AMBE schools. The Akwesasne Mohawk Police are...
After a long winter, the coming of spring can be a time of new growth, not just for you, but for mold too. Here in St. Lawrence County, months of heavy snowstorms followed by rapid thawing can lead to everything from ice dams and leaking roofs to flooding basements. Such events can lead to mold growth, and the longer these conditions go uncorrected, the more damage that mold can do to your home. Mold exposures can trigger several health effects including headaches, congestion, skin rashes, and shortness of breath. In addition to physical proble...

Some people interpret the Great Law as authorizing the spread of Peace through aggressive actions and war. Others point to the Tree of Peace as the symbol of the Confederacy, and to the fact that the weapons of war were cast into a deen pit under the Tree, never to be seen again. The historical record contains both war and peace: accounts of long and bloody battles and torture contrast vividly with councils in which weapons of war are put away and words of peace are expressed with dignity and hope. The debate over whether war was an acceptable...

Many are operated by licensed boaters who are aware of the impact that wakes...
By Olivia Rosane. Fifty years ago, the U.S. passed the Clean Water Act with the goal of ensuring “fishable, swimmable” water across the U.S. by 1983. Now, a new report from the Environmental Integrity Project (EIP) finds the country has fallen far short of that goal. In fact, about half of the nation’s lakes and rivers are too polluted for swimming, fishing or drinking. “The Clean Water Act should be celebrated on its 50th birthday for making America’s waterways significantly cleaner,” EIP Executive Director Eric Schaeffer said in a press rel...
