    (March 27, 2019) The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne released a statement on March 26, 2019 informing the community that Kawehno:ke District Chief Dennis Chaussi has resigned from council. Chaussi told Indian Time, “I will not be held hostage to a petition that is being held over my head. I’m not a puppet. It’s a threat, and if they don’t like what I do or what I say they threaten to use it. This is not good governance.   • Dredging to begin next month at Grasse River Superfund Site in Massena, New York

(March 25, 2019) – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced that dredging will begin in April to clean up sediment contaminated with polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) at the Grasse River Superfund Site (aka Alcoa Aggregation) in Massena, New York. PCB contamination is the result of past waste disposal practices at the Alcoa West (now Arconic) facility.   • Tribal Police Release Statement on Accidental Death

    On Friday, March 15, 2019, the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal Police were notified that the body of a male was found located near a wooded area east of Cook Road and north of State Route 37. The male was identified as Duran Jackson, 32 of Akwesasne. The incident is currently under investigation, however preliminary findings indicate Mr. Jackson’s death to be accidental in nature. The 47-year-old was convicted of second-degree murder after about a week of testimony, followed by about 7 hours of deliberations. Jurors decided Hebert murdered Yekel, 24, around June 7, 2014.
