On April 2, 2008 the Seneca Nation and other Natives from around the State will gather at Niagara Square in Buffalo, NY to rally in protest against tax collection on reservations. New York State has made countless efforts for the past two decades to force Native-owned stores on reservations to charge sales tax to their non-Native customers. Mohawks from Akwesasne are planning to attend the rally and also hope to organize another one in Salamanca, New York at the end of April, with support from the Oneidas and Senecas. Minnie Garrow, of...
What’s so absolutely incredible? Kids, they’re absolutely incredible. Once again the Akwesasne Coalition for Community Empowerment sponsored the national, letter-writing campaign urging adults to write about an absolutely incredible kid in their life. Children need positive reinforcements in their lives. The right words of encouragement can come at just the time a child needs them most – helping the child make better decisions, build self-esteem, and even be more compassionate and success...

Letter to the Editor Re: April 5, 2008 St. Regis Mohawk Tribal Referendum to ‘amend the ‘94 Tribal Council Procedures Act by changing from a 3 Chief to a 6 Chief system’. This letter is to all Akwesasronon, the time has come to ‘stir the ashes’ if we are to protect our inherent rights as Ohkwehonwe people to have a voice in our governing affairs. The Referendum scheduled by the Tribe’s Governance Committee, set for April 5, 2008 is the wrong referendum question. It ignores the voices of over 2,000 Mohawks who signed the petition questioning the...
Dear Editor, The situation with international border crossings creates pressure for individuals to identify with countries A or B. The acceptable solution of course is self-identification, as community members have stated all along. An Akwesasronon solution offers relief to those most in need of such relief here. Moving further along this line of self-identification is the creation of the Mohawk Department of Motor Vehicles (MDMV). The ability to issue motor vehicle license plates as well as identification cards would be critical components in...
Eighty years ago the Haudenosaunee, and particularly the Mohawks, were confronted with a serious threat to our ability to secure a living by practicing the skill of ironworking in the US. The US Immigration authorities were determined to arrest, confine and deport those Iroquois who resided in Canada but worked south of the border. The Americans may have been upset with the Haudenosaunee for its rejection of US citizenship after Congress had enacted the Indian Citizenship Act of 1924. The Haudenosaunee leadership realized that by accepting...

A Mrs. Beasley doll, a 1908 coin, a Canadian $2 bill. Where would you find such items? Thirty teams of at least two people had to ask themselves that question as participants in the Jacobs Tobacco Scavenger Hunt. Along with strange items to hunt for, participants also had many tasks to complete. The teams had to make a snowman, have their photo taken with a set of twins, blow a bubble, pack as many people as possible into a car, and hunt down models from the Nations Next Top Model show. Along...

One of the problems encountered in the fire service is stuck valves. Most of the time it’s caused by not using the valves for long periods of time. Myself, I was running an engine one time when another line came off and I went to charge it with water. I grabbed the handle and yanked. Nothing happened, the handle was stuck and wouldn’t budge. I grabbed with both hands and pulled. Now you have to be careful because of something called “Water Hammer” that happens when large amounts of water under pressure is suddenly released. It can shake a...
This book is a fantasy that is so well written that it could be real. I love this author; Cassandra Clare, who is one to watch out for. This book is a page turner and very exciting read. Clary Fray has never considered herself as more then normal, until she witnesses a murder that was committed by men that only she can see. Clary reacts on instinct and tries to stop these men, only to find out that these aren’t just normal men. They are Shadowhunters, and the man they were trying to kill was a demon. Clary is put through a whirlwind of c...
When Baby T was a newborn I used paint and did little footprints in paint. Then again when he was a year. It was such a big difference, birth to a year. Baby T has also come home with foot print projects from daycare and now school so we’ve got an archive of his little footprints. I’m not too sure if everyone is aware of the incidents that have left my two bathrooms rugless. So I’ll explain. Last year Baby T flooded the master bathroom. I’m blaming him but it is partly my own fault. I had given Baby T a bath before he was getting picked...
