  • The Village; Tribute to a Friend.

    Mar 19, 2009

Our Village will never be same when I get home without my friend, Guma. I’d look out my window and Guma would be coming up the street.  I’d know what the weather was like if she wore her blue hat. Cold. When she came up the street on her bike, it was a beautiful day. When she came up the street with her coffee, she was ready for bowling. When I didn’t find her around the Village, she didn’t feel good, and wasn’t coming with us. She wasn’t well for a long time, but when she went bowling, she was a very happy gal. She had lots of fun, laughed...

  • Letter to the editor

    Mar 19, 2009

She:kon Akwesasnenoron,  I write this letter today  directed at all drivers out there who honk their horns at me as well as show me their middle finger,  because of my horrible bad luck with law enforcement in the North Country, I will continue to obey the speed limit. I do this because I have no intention of giving a dime to New York State, I am proud to say  I’m Kanienkehaka, and I love my people but I would rather support my people in other ways financially  than the traffic court. I do have some suggestions if in the event you are pulled...

  • To the Editor

    Mar 19, 2009

To the Editor, In “Cigarette Prices Jump” Indian Time failed to report the real story. Is the price increase going into our Tribal General Fund to pay for, oh say, the Clinic budget short fall, or into the deep pockets of the already fat store owners association? Where is the money going and how is it being spent? Is scares me every time the Store Owners Association in Akwesasne meets with tribal officials, the non-store owning Tribal membership seem to lose a little more of their sovereignty. Talk about the tail wagging the dog. The pop...

  • OH, HAPPY DAY

    Mar 19, 2009

OH, HAPPY DAY Governor Paterson, the best governor of New York State, he went so far as to convince your elected leaders that not only will we accept his tax agreement to tax non-native from buying cigarettes from our local stores but that they will also increase (whose taxes are these?) the locally made cigarettes for all customers that walk into these same stores. With the last taxes mentioned who will benefit from these taxes and how will they benefit? You see, we are now extinct peoples when your own elected leaders refuse to recognize...

  • A Small Bit of Info on the New York State Power Authority

    Doug George Kanentiio|Mar 19, 2009

The NYSPA is the ultimate “Indian giver”.  We, as a community, have an absolute right to Niionenhiaseko:wane (Barnhart Island).  It was never sold to anyone.  It is ours as are the waters, which flow on both sides of the island. We have a right to demand a fair percentage of the profits generated from the St. Lawrence Power Dam.  We made a huge mistake when we agreed not to challenge the licensing of the dam.  In 1988 we estimated we could have assessed an annual fee of over $33,000,000 for the use of our land and water.  That amount would be...

Via had set up at her own folding card table, the usual sort of table found in every home, for the kitchen euchre game. “When I first started here, all we had for card games were the big, round tables,” said Via. “They are too wide to reach across, so we needed the real thing.” It was a surprise to find out that cribba...

  • Elderly at Iakhihsohtha get new hair salon

    Shannon Burns|Mar 19, 2009

For years, residents of the Iakhihsohtha Home for the Elderly in Tsi Snaihne (Snye) have made do with what they had. Every few months when their hair needed a trim, color, perm or style, they sat in an old bathroom and let Margaret, a hairstylist from Fort Covington, do her work. The surroundings weren’t perfect. An old toilet was within arm’s reach and hampers held soiled laundry. However, residents were getting their hair tended to and that’s all they cared about. When Maureen Benedict was h...
