    This year’s carnival was hosted by the Akwesasne Coalition for Community Empowerment on Fri. and Sat. Feb. 17th and 18th. The events were held at the Seniors Center in Hogansburg, the St. Regis Mohawk School and at the Kateri Hall.   • Kateri Tekakwitha will become North America's first aboriginal saint

    Indian Time has received news from community members that Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha, ‘Lily of the Mohawks’, will be named a Saint along with six others on Sunday, October 21, 2012. She was declared venerable in 1943. Pope John Paul beautified her in 1980, making her the first Native American to be beatified. Her Feast day is celebrated on July 14th and she is considered the Patron of the environment and ecology. The Kateri Circle group in Akwesasne has started their fundraising for the trip to Rome.     Around 3:00 a.m. Monday night the call came in through Central Dispatch to the 911 building in Malone, NY dispatching the Hogansburg-Akwesasne Volunteer Fire Department to a possible structure fire on River Road in Tsi Snaihne. Discovery of the burning home was made by a routine patrol by the Akwesasne Mohawk Police Services.     Viola June (Hill) Brant died peacefully with family by her side on Sunday, February 12, 2012 at the Cornwall Community Hospital in her 75th year. Vi was born July 20, 1937 and was the loving wife of William (Art) Brant and dear mother of Carol, Ronald, Gloria, Bonnie and Stepmother of Bonnie (Gord), Debbie (Ted), Pam (Tim) and Cin (Fred).     In 2009, a book titled “A Lily Among Thorns. The Mohawk Repatriation of Kateri Tekakwit:tha” was published by the Wampum Chronicles and Darren Bonaparte is the author. It’s 274 pages long and includes historical photographs. R. Kakwirakeron Montour created the drawings in the book that depict Kateri and her family.     The Iroquois Nationals under 19 Field Lacrosse team played Brown University’s Varsity Team on Saturday, February 18, 2012 and lost 11 to 7. The game was at Brown University in Rhode Island.
