Feb. 26, 2021. Reacquisition of Tribal lands has been a priority for the Akwesasne community for many generations. Tribal leaders, past and present, have been consistent in the effort to reacquire our stolen lands at every opportunity. In 2018, Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe (SRMT) repurchased 240 acres of reservation land illegally purchased by New York State (NYS) in 1824. For several years a group of community members, led by Roger Jock, had occupied the lands to make a political point about past violations by NYS. In a good faith effort to...

There they held their talking circles, the community closet, and gave out important resources for any community members who were victims of domestic and/or sexual abuse. Over the years, the Seven Dancers Coalition has grown, to the point where the staff felt they have outgrown the Old Burning Sky building. The dolls made from cornhusk have an interesting story that is told to the children. As in most stories there is a moral that goes with it. Long ago, the cornhusk dolls had faces. Their job was to play with and keep the children amused. For many years both the dolls and children were happy playing their games, acting out the adult roles and just having fun. One day the adults noticed the children were not their usual playful selves and asked what was the matter. The children answered that their dolls were at the river looking at themselves in...

Its energy hunger even led to a warning from Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen last week, as CNBC reported. “It’s an extremely inefficient way of conducting transactions,” Yellen said, “and the amoun...
By Doug George-Kanentiio In Germany they called the push for more territory “lebensraum” or “living space”, a drive to expand that nation as a natural consequence. It was first used by Oscar Peschel from his summation of Charles Darwin’s “Origin of Species” and later promoted by Friedrich Ratzel in which geography was tied to physical, cultural and national identity. They believed that certain ethnic and racial groups were inclined by nature to dominate others and exercise dominion over the resources of the earth. It was the basis for imperiali...
By Mary LaFrance March 20th marks the first official day of Spring 2021, and as a community we just witnessed the one-year anniversary of the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. The unintentional side effect of this past year is that for many it has forced us to slow down and focus on ourselves and spend more time at home. In 2020, home-based projects took off, like renovations, cooking, and for many, gardening. For those who were new to gardening there were trial and error, victory and defeat, and...

So, let’s get a head start on spring cleaning and start with our kitchen counter – the place that accumulates mail, mittens, wrappers, mask and leftovers not to mention small kitchen appliances, knickknacks, kitchen utensils and more. Let’s face it – there is something entirely refreshing and life-giving about a clean, uncluttered kitchen counter. In fact, it is one of my favorit...
