  • Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe Receives Favorable Land Claims Ruling

    Oct 4, 2012

Akwesasne Mohawk Territory – On Friday September 28, 2012 Magistrate Judge Dancks of the Northern District of New York refused to dismiss the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe’s claim to the Hogansburg Triangle. The Mohawks faced a huge hurdle since all other land claims had been dismissed in New York in total. With the help of an expert, the tribe had presented census data showing that the area is primarily inhabited by Mohawks, which Dancks relied on in her ruling. The defendants, New York State et al,...

To the community, Hopefully this will clear up the issue of CKON staff smoking INSIDE the Communication Building that was printed in our paper on Sept. 20, 2012. Indian Time and CKON are two totally different businesses. Many years ago, Salli Benedict and a group of community members submitted a grant to build a communication building so the community would always be informed by both news print (Indian Time) and radio (CKON). Indian Time is a project of the Mohawk Nation Council. CKON is run by a Board of Directors, namely Jerry Cook, Andy Cook...

Editor, I read the other day in the Observer, “Double Digit Tax Hike Possible”. One of the factors leading to the proposed tax increase is, according to Town Supervisor Joe Gray…“no revenue from casino gaming compact monies…” That is the view from his side of the fence. The actual reason for that is the State government of NY has failed (no surprise) to guarantee the exclusivity of Mohawk gaming in a 7 county wide area as per the State/Tribal Gaming compact agreed to by NY’s governor and Tribal representatives. In reality, that is no big dea...

  • 4 Leaf-Clover Record Holder May Live Down Saint

    Ian Oakes|Oct 4, 2012

On Sunday, while at the fishing derby, I was approached with a story idea. The premise was simple, if there is a world record for four leaf clovers found, and it currently belonged to a 10 year old, it may now belong to St. Regis resident, Laura lee Thompson. Thompson and 3 other people were outside of her sister in law’s store, the Akwesasne Cigarette Depot, and found what they thought to be one, but later turned into 15 four-leaf clovers. Thompson alone found 10 clovers. So we have the p...

  • William Penn Belt

    Tehanetorens|Oct 4, 2012

This is the original belt delivered by the Lenni-Lenape (Delaware) Chiefs to William Penn at the celebrated peace treaty under the elm tree at Shackamaxon in 1682. The hand of William Penn is joined in friendship with the hand of the Indian, and the two smokes (councils) of the two peoples are joined together as one. William Penn at that time said these words to the Indians, “We meet on the broad pathway of good faith and good will. No advantage shall be taken on either side, but all shall be o...

  • 25 Ways to Talk So Children Will Listen

    Oct 4, 2012

    • Discipline & Behavior A major part of discipline is learning how to talk with children. The way you talk to your child teaches him how to talk to others. Here are some talking tips we have learned with our children: 1. Connect Before You Direct Before giving your child directions, squat to your child’s eye level and engage your child in eye-to-eye contact to get his attention. Teach him how to focus: “Mary, I need your eyes.” “Billy, I need your ears.” Offer the same body language when listening to the child. Be sure not to make your eye co...

Dear Dr. Per Cap: I’m worried about my finances. I can’t keep track of monthly bills, and I never know how much I have in my bank account. I owe a lot on my credit cards and just can’t keep up. I make a good salary and have a monthly per-capita payment that helps, but I’m still in debt. I keep trying to get organized but it is too much. What should I do? ~ Signed, Too Much Dear Too Much: When I was a kid I kept all of my toys in the basement. I had shelves and a couple of toy boxes for storage, but sooner or later they’d all wind up on the fl...
