By Kaniehtonkie During a global pandemic, COVID positive Akwesasronon are left without local support. Support in the sense of dealing with long term COVID symptoms. More than a year into the pandemic, it’s not clear how many Covid-19 patients go on to develop what’s called ‘long-term Covid’, or ‘Long Covid’. A recent study that included mostly people who had just mild cases found 30% were reporting symptoms as long as nine months after contracting the virus. Other studies have found a higher percentage. From the site of the first COVID outbr...
By Marcia Dunn. Reprinted with permission from Indian County Today. CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — A NASA rover streaked through the orange Martian sky and landed on the planet Thursday, accomplishing the riskiest step yet in an epic quest to bring back rocks that could answer whether life ever existed on Mars. Ground controllers at the space agency’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, cheered and exchanged fist bumps and high-fives in triumph — and relief — on receiving confirmation that the six-wheeled Perseverance had touched...

Last week I posted a flyer regarding Table Talk on Autism. It's a free event, just email the contact name listed. These individuals are interested in hearing the stories of how families in First Nations communities are struggling to cope with the everyday needs of our special needs children. How can we get more support for First Nations families? This is just part of the Autism Awareness needed to bring light to what is the greatest need for our families and children. I encourage anyone to sign...

By Beverly Law and William Moomaw. Reprinted with permission from EcoWatch Protecting forests is an essential strategy in the fight against climate change that has not received the attention it deserves. Trees capture and store massive amounts of carbon. And unlike some strategies for cooling the climate, they don’t require costly and complicated technology. Yet although tree-planting initiatives are popular, protecting and restoring existing forests rarely attracts the same level of support. As an example, forest protection was notably missing...

By: Angele D'Alessio, Mental Health Promoter Canadian grain farmer Sean Stanford hit a low point a few years ago. His crops were poor, bills were piling up and he was struggling to handle his workload. His situation worsened until it caused a health crisis. While lying in bed one day, he felt a crushing weight on his chest and one of his arms. He was sure he was having a heart attack, but a doctor diagnosed him with extreme anxiety. Stanford's experience is not uncommon among Canadian farmers. M...
Submitted by Paul Hetzler Where agriculture is concerned, dairy is king (or is dairy queen?) in northern NY State. Looking out the window now in late February, though, it looks like we should be growing snow peas or iceberg lettuce. Actually, for farmers, maple producers, foresters and gardeners, there is an upside to having plenty of winter white stuff. Snow has been called “the poor person’s fertilizer” because it’s a source of trace elements and more importantly, of plant-available forms of nitrogen, a nutrient often in short supply....
