On Feb. 10, 2008, at 8:00 p.m., officers from the Canada Border Services Agency seized Oxycodone pills and marijuana from a young Akwesasne male. Customs agents at the Port of Entry on Cornwall Island conducted a secondary vehicle inspection on a vehicle traveling from the United States into Canada. During their search of the vehicle officers located and seized 43 oxycodone pills and 7 grams of marihuana. Oxycodone is a prescription narcotic used to treat pain with effects similar to morphine. The family of John Benedict, who is the son of Harry and Doris Benedict, has been diagnosed with a life threatening disease known as Amyloidosis. This disease is an abnormal build up of proteins in the blood that settle into the major organs causing organ failure. Treatments include aggressive chemotherapy and stem cell transplant. He must make multiple trips to Boston University Medical Center to receive these treatments. The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne’s Healthy Babies program hosts events and workshops regularly in the community to give parents something extra to learn about. The St. Regis Recreation is hosting and sponsoring a twice-weekly yoga class for all community members. The first class was held in January and a group of regulars as well as weekly newcomers have been attending the class every Monday and Friday. On Friday Feb. 7, a school wide Native Social Dance was held in the gymnasium of the St. Regis Mohawk School. There were three sections for various grade levels throughout the day.
