    Feb 8, 2018

CONGRATULATIONS ELDERS 68 YEARS OLD AND OLDER! At the February Tribal monthly meeting, Tribal Council announced that tentatively starting July 1, 2018 they will start paying seniors 68 years old and older $200 a month. I say tentatively because they have found the money to pay the benefit, but before it can start there is still a lot of work that needs to be done! I urge seniors to call Tribal Council, not only to thank them for finally making progress, but also to remind them of the importance of this benefit. Attendance at monthly Tribal...

First on the agenda was the inaugural presentation of the Community Recognition Awards by Sub Chief Agnes Jacobs (please see “Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe Honors Three Heroes” in this issue). The Tribe is exploring the possibility of erecting streetlights in Akwesasne at most intersections and as one community member suggested – at high accident sites. • Donors Urged To Help The Red Cross Maintain Blood Supply

    Feb 8, 2018

(February 5, 2018) Winter storms and the flu don’t just mean a lot of people are missing work and school – it also means they can’t keep their American Red Cross blood donation appointments. The Red Cross is urging healthy donors of all blood types to roll up a sleeve to help maintain the blood supply for patients in need. In 2018, severe winter weather forced about 600 blood drives to cancel, resulting in more than 17,500 uncollected blood and platelet donations. And, widespread flu across the U.S. has resulted in lower turnout at blood drive...

  • Not in Tents, Just Intense

    Feb 8, 2018

Submitted by Paul Hetzler, Horticulture and Natural Resources Educator, CCE St. Lawrence County Winter is not the season when people think about tents, except maybe to be glad they don’t live in one. I do have friends who love winter camping, and the fact they have never extended an invitation is evidence of how much they value our friendship. Oddly enough, winter is a crucial time to look for signs of forest-tent caterpillars (FTC). In spite of their name, FTC do not weave a silken tent-like nest as do their close cousins the eastern tent cate...

  • Pictographs

    Feb 8, 2018

Submitted by John Kahionhes Fadden Pictographic images existed throughout the Americas in many forms, reflecting different cultural groups. In the Southwest, images were pecked onto stone surfaces and are called petroglyphs. Some exist in the Northeast as well. Throughout the western plains pictographic images were used to identify cultural groups, express achievements, and to decoratively enhance dwellings. Teepees of buffalo hide carried images of clan, nation, and legend as did shields and clothing. To the south and on into South America,...
