  • Jack Frost and Hoarfrost

    Barbara Gray|Feb 7, 2008

I can remember looking at the frost on the windows when I was very young.  Sometimes I would etch my own designs into the ice on the windows with my fingernails, but nothing I did was as intricate as those beautiful ice designs on the window.  All I got was scratchy lines and a very cold fingertip.  My mother, when she saw the frost on the window, would say, “Jack Frost was here again.”  I think Jack Frost painted the windows is something we have all heard of at one time or another. So, who is Jack Frost? Jack Frost is a figure from folklo...

  • A Great and Terrible Beauty

    Delia McDonald|Feb 7, 2008

This book has it all: the suspense, the drama, and even a hint of romance to go with it. This is the first book I’ve read by Libby Bray. It’s a success. Gamma Doyle has just arrived at Spence Academy for girls. She soon realizes that she is very different from the other girls. Gamma was raised in India, so she is not up to date in the fashions nor does she know any of the things that the other girls have already been taught. Something had happened to Gamma that caused her to be sent to this awful school. Tragedy in her family and some wei...

  • Kana:takon children show their love

    Marina Restinetti and Katrina Bonisch|Feb 7, 2008

The Kana:takon Daycare was filled with warmth from the children of the community who showed off their Valentine’s Day artwork Tuesday. The children were excited to pose for the cameras as they proudly showed off the collages they had made earlier that morning. When asked for whom she had made her picture for, Arianna Thompson, 4, replied that is was for her mother. Louie Thompson Francis, 3, decided to take a different approach. His collages consisted of Hot Rods instead of hearts. N...

  • Whatever works

    An Anonymous Mother|Feb 7, 2008

I am not a very good singer. The only person who has ever really heard me sing is Baby T. I don’t feel embarrassed to sing to him since he is my child. But I do get a red face if someone catches me mid-song. I found out when Baby T was about six months old that rocking him and singing always alleviated his cold symptoms. I know it’s not a magical cure or anything like that but it’s been a soother for the last few years. I reserve my show only for Baby T when he isn’t feeling well or is overtired and needs a little help falling asleep. So from...

  • Tales From the Station

    Adrian McDonald|Feb 7, 2008

Some things we do, we do for other departments under a “Mutual Aid” agreement. This agreement binds us to help out our other departments when they have a big one. We found ourselves standing by with an engine at a neighboring department one night while they fought a barn fire. We were studying maps and trying to figure out what to do if we get another call and we have to roll. We’re a bit on the spoiled side in that if you open the fridge or cupboard in any of our stations there’s usually food found within. We go to another departm...

So, don’t be scared to come and visit us (we’ll only photograph those willing) but if you have something special you want to s...

  • Trash Talk

    Feb 7, 2008

Across the country, each community makes its own rules; what you can recycle might be different from what a friend in a neighboring town can.  There are, however, some basics that will make recycling convenient and will reduce your environmental impact. 1.  Contact the right local agency to find out what’s collected and how.  Check the local government section of the phone book under recycling, solid waste, public works or environmental departments (names vary).  Or try the National Recycling Coalition’s state resources list: (nrc-recycle.org/l...
