  • MCA Receives Settlement Offer from Canada for St. Lawrence Seaway Proceedings

    The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne wishes to inform the community that a settlement offer has been received by Canada for its Seaway Proceedings, filed in 1976. Canada has presented an offer of $45 million as compensation for the impacts of the construction of the Seaway in the 1950s. The settlement offer also includes the return of lands, including certain lands along the bridge corridor on Kawehno:ke. The offer will require the completion of a settlement agreement, which is currently being finalized between MCA and the Government of Canada....

    AKWESASNE – Members of the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe have historically suffered from a much higher than average level of cancers and other illnesses due to Polychlorinated Biphenyls (“PCBs”) in our blood, and new research shows that certain PCBs cause increased risks for three particular kinds of cancer: non-Hodgkins Lymphoma (“NHL”), breast cancer, and melanoma.     A Hogansburg teen has been charged in connection with an alleged burglary and assault that took place in Massena in January. On Jan. 26, village police charged Jamie S. Montoya, 19, of 151 Frogtown Road, Hogansburg with second-degree burglary and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, both felonies.
